On any given day at Creston Village Assisted Living in Paso Robles, a visitor can find an average of 100 senior citizen residents, 40 employees and 5 dogs and 5 cats who also live at the community.
However, at their Hoedown, thanks to a new partnership with a few local community organizations, you could also find some new short term residents - a pony, a donkey, a Highland cow!
Each year as part of the nation-wide celebration of Assisted Living Week the community designates each day that week with a themed day replete with costumes and food. “Being situated in Paso Robles, making one of the days each year a Western themed day is a no brainer” said Adam Bramwell, Executive Director. “But, since we do that every year, we needed to find a way to add a new spark to it.”
That spark came from a partnership with Transitions Mental Health Association who has been visiting the community to offer support and camaraderie for the veterans who live there. During one of those visits to the building, the subject of animal therapy came up. And while Creston Village has routine canine therapy visits, the benefits of large animal therapy was discussed. With many of the residents being farmers or ranchers in their past life, the presence of farm animals would be a logical addition – a part of their life that many have not experienced in a long time.
Enter the Conifer Alliance Family Foundation – a San Luis Obispo County private based family foundation with an underlying goal of improving the lives of those within the county. Vanessa Lawrence, director of the organization’s mission said “One of those passions is the special connection between people and animals. Through visits with horses, miniature horses, donkeys and goats we hope to bring moments of companionship, connection and joy to people who may especially appreciate them.”
In their first true outreach of this type, the foundation took collection of animals to Creston Village to roam on their courtyard lawn to allow residents and visitors alike the ability to enjoy some animal companionship while enjoying live music and a themed meal outdoors. Creston Village director Bramwell continued by saying “We are thrilled to welcome these organizations to our community to bring new and fun events to those who live there. But when you combine that with a great meal, and live music from the Rockin’ B’s – you have a recipe for a truly epic day with many memories rekindled.”
