Beverly was admitted to a short-term acute care hospital for hypercapnic hypoxemic respiratory failure due to COPD exacerbation and left-sided pneumonia and atelectasis (collapsed lung).

Dependent on full ventilator support, Beverly was transferred to Kindred Hospital East New Jersey for respiratory care and specialized rehabilitation. The goal was to get her back home on a trach collar to support her chronic breathing challenges, but she was very weak and deconditioned, requiring maximum assistance to stand and transfer out of bed to a chair.

With the staff’s support and encouragement, Beverly completed 72 hours on the trach collar at Kindred. Homecare education started, and Beverly was outstanding in her efforts to learn and do return demonstrations on all her respiratory care. In addition, she received physical and occupational therapy and regained endurance and strength. She advanced to the point of walking 250 feet with a walker and climbing 12 stairs up and down.

Beverly was discharged from Kindred and succeeded in returning to the comfort of her home.

Earnestine experienced life-threatening complications while undergoing surgery to remove part of her colon and address gastrointestinal issues. While in the operating room, Earnestine lost blood pressure, and she was taken to the ICU with her abdomen still open. She experienced respiratory failure and was intubated, placed on vasopressors and put under deep sedation.

On full ventilator support, Earnestine was transferred to Kindred Hospital East New Jersey for respiratory therapy and specialized care to treat six pressure wounds, along with the open surgical abdominal wound and a left ileostomy that required copious drainage. She also required a feeding tube and needed 2-3 people to help her roll or sit up at the edge of the bed.

After arriving in such a fragile state, Earnestine achieved milestone after milestone in her recovery during a 63-day stay at Kindred.

With the support of Kindred’s respiratory team, she completed 72 hours with a trach collar, then 72 hours of capping and nasal oxygen at 2LPM. Then, 3 days later, a big announcement was made over the PA speaker to celebrate the removal of her tracheostomy tube.

In addition, Earnestine passed a swallow test and began eating a puree diet. She also regained strength and the ability to stand and take steps in her room. Last but not least, five of Earnestine’s six pressure injuries healed by the time of discharge.

After discharge, Earnestine was transferred to a skilled nursing facility to continue her recovery.

Robert, who has been in remission from prostate cancer for 11 years, is married and has one stepdaughter. His wife returned home from the store one day and found him on the floor, changing color and gurgling. EMS found him pulseless. They gave him Narcan four times and began CPR, resulting in return of spontaneous circulation.

When Robert was admitted to Kindred Hospital East New Jersey, he was very confused, breathing through a trach tube, and unable to speak or swallow. He was initially in denial of his impairments and resistant to work with the rehab team. He needed positive reinforcement and encouragement to gradually participate.

Robert passed his swallow test and was initially able to eat a soft diet and thickened liquids. Robert eventually advanced to a regular diet, allowing his feeding tube to be removed. He began to walk with a walker and began to talk using a speaking valve. He soon was able to walk laps around the hallway. Robert was fast-tracked to capping trials. A big “Hurrah!” announcement was made for his decannulation.

Robert was very excited to leave and met his goal of going to acute inpatient rehab to continue his recovery.

“Thank you for helping me so quickly,” he said.

“What would Kindred do without Nancy?”, a question that speaks volumes about the impact she makes every single day. Nancy was described as calming, knowledgeable, professional, and someone who simply “just knows what to do.”

Because of her attention, precision, and dedication to wound care, another facility shared that a patient’s surgery would not have gone as well had he not arrived in such unbelievable condition.
