Neil Edward South

Neil Edward South was born on January 28, 1939, in Dearborn, Michigan to Myrtle (Allen) and John D. South. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 20, 2026, taking his last breath during a reading of the 91st Psalm.

After graduating from Royal Oak Dondero High School in 1957, Neil joined the Michigan National Guard. He served for six years while also completing undergraduate and graduate degrees at Wayne State University in Detroit. He then joined Ford Motor Company where he worked for 31 years as a principal staff engineer and trainer, among other positions. He was one of the pioneers in computer-aided design during the 1960s.

Neil married Gloria Anne Decker on May 12, 1961, in Rochester, Michigan. Neil was devoted to his “Wifey” for 61 years as a loving and supportive husband, always game for their next adventure. They lived a full life, dedicating themselves to family and helping others. After retiring, they enjoyed running the Bears' Den Bed & Breakfast together in Traverse City, Michigan, for five years.

Neil's selfless love and care gave his family a cornerstone of guidance, encouragement and support. He loved both listening and problem solving while encouraging people to do and be their best. A closet extrovert, he blossomed late in life to share a wave or salute, a smile or conversation with anyone who crossed his path. Even when he struggled to speak during his final months, he continued living his philosophy of improving the day of everyone he met.

Raised in a creative and musical family, Neil had an extensive array of interests and accomplishments. He became fluent in German as an adult through methodical and dedicated study and practice. This was how he approached mastering any new skill or interest. A natural teacher, he taught two of his grandchildren German during their homeschooling years.

After 40+ years not playing, he took up his clarinet again in his early sixties. Neil became proficient enough to play for six seasons with the Northwestern Michigan College Community Band. He also enjoyed ten years playing Dixieland music with the Front Street Jazz Band, performing with the group around the Grand Traverse region. Neil also taught his granddaughter, Angelica, to play the clarinet and they shared many hours together learning and performing.

Neil's eclectic, keen and curious mind easily embraced new subjects. He variously immersed himself in dinosaurs, anthropology, languages, the sciences, Photoshop, current events and so much more. Neil always embraced new technology and liked to be on the cutting edge.

He also mastered leather working, photography - building his own darkroom - wood carving (including chess sets,) knot tying, model building, juggling, cooking and baking. In his mid-80s, he worked at learning the piano and took up sketching. He was an lifelong avid reader, relishing science fiction as well as mystery, action and adventure books in both English and German. Neil also adored movies and had an extensive video collection.

Passionate about exercise, Neil starting running in the 1970s. He trained in Judo during the 1960s and practiced Yoga into his 80s. Always up for a walk, at 86 he was still doing squats, weights, push-ups and dead-hangs. A “bicep check” was a trademark greeting even after he could no longer do his beloved exercises.

An avid traveler dating to his days at Ford, where the company sent him on many business trips, he visited Germany numerous times. He and Gloria also explored many states in their trailer with a square dance camping group. An iconic family memory was a five-week trip to California and back in 1962, driving and tent camping in a red VW Beetle with daughter, Julie, then nine months old.

Neil was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria, his parents, brothers, Gordon and Jimmy South and nephew, Chris South. He will be interred with his wife at the St. Francis River Cemetery in Duelm, Minnesota, at a later date.

He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Mark Benner; daughter Carol South; grandchildren, Angelica (Chris Jones) South, Sage (Amelia Davis) Benner, Rose Benner and Laurel (Nate) Devereaux and nephews, David and John Brian South. Neil also loved his family's exchange students; son German (“Sherm”) Spiller and daughter Daniela Buehler. He cherished calls and visits with them over decades.

A celebration of Neil's life will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at 2 p.m. at Adams Funeral Home, 502 W. Michigan Ave., Paw Paw, Michigan.

Neil’s family wants to acknowledge our family doctor, Dr. Pearce DuPuis, for his guidance, humor and support over the years. They also deeply thank the dedicated, caring and hard-working staff at Maple Lake Assisted Living Facility. The angels there provided exceptional care, loving support and a true home for his last seven months. “Waka Waka!”

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to West Michigan Homeschool Fine Arts (www.wmhfa.org/donations) or to Worship Arts (worshipartskalamazoo.com/support). These programs reflect Neil's love of music, education and homeschooling.

Geraldine Marie Rix

On November 28, 1935, Geraldine Marie Martin was born and on June 16, 2026, passed away peacefully in her home. Within that time, she created a life that was intentional to be welcomed by God in heaven and to greatly impact the lives of others along the way.

Geraldine (Gerry) was born to John Martin and Genevieve Martin as the seventh of nine children. The only girl in this strong Irish Catholic family, she is survived by two brothers, Berney (Anne) and Thomas (Sylvia). All other brothers so dear to Gerry were James (Rose), Jack (Mary), Ed (Barbara), Bill (Joyce), Larry, and Ray.

Gerry attended St. Dorothy’s Elementary School and graduated from Academy of Our Lady on the south side of Chicago. She went on to attend DePaul University before shifting gears to enter the corporate workforce in downtown Chicago.

In the summer of 1961, Gerry visited Michigan with a girlfriend and through a family friend met Jim Rix of Mattawan. Within just a few months, they were engaged to be married and did so in May of 1962. In June of 1963, they welcomed their firstborn, Timothy. Within the next five years, three daughters were also born – Thresa (David Howe), Tamara (Peter Davis), and Nancy (Rob Loftis). Throughout those years, Jim and Gerry together built their family home in Mattawan, where they lived throughout the remainder of Gerry’s life.

A devoted Catholic, Gerry attended St. John Bosco Church in Mattawan throughout her entire married life. She held several volunteer roles and raised her children within the church, so important within her spiritual life.

After all children entered school, Gerry went back into the work world, holding executive support roles within various organizations. She proudly worked for and retired from FEMA Corporation in Portage in 1994.

In addition to raising her kids, regularly volunteering at church, and working outside the home, Gerry was passionate about gardening as well as the arts, including piano, sewing, and quilting. She made several dear friends through quilting, and her amazing work still fills her home as well as those of her children. Additionally, in their retirement years, Gerry and Jim traveled throughout the United States, enjoying time together and with friends.

Before Gerry’s passing, she and Jim were blessed with eleven grandchildren and great grandchildren – Jennifer (Lee) McChesney, Jessica Howe, Haleigh (Drew) Blaszkowski, Kaitlyn Loftis, Emily Davis, Piper Davis, Maggie Rix, Jimmy Rix, Devlyn McChesney, Regan McChesney, and Bodhi Loftis.

We will greatly miss Gerry as a mom, grandma, and friend. Family and friends are invited to a memorial mass service at St. John Bosco Church in Mattawan, to begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 25,2026. A luncheon will be served following in the church hall. A private burial will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery in Mattawan.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Mattawan Wildpaks, Mattawan Area Food Pantry, or Centrica Care Navigators (formerly known as Hospice of Southwest Michigan).

“Therefore, we continue to be confident. We know that while we dwell in the body, we are away from the Lord. We walk by faith, not by sight. I repeat, we are full of confidence and would much rather be away from the body and be at home with the Lord.” – 2 Corinthians, Chapter 5, Verses 6-8.

John Edward Frank

John Edward Frank passed away peacefully after a few days in the hospital on June 14, 2026. He will be greatly missed by an enormous family and many friends.

Born to Gustof and Anna Frank on September 29, 1950, John was the youngest of six siblings. He grew up playing kick-the-can and riding bikes with neighbors, relatives, and friends in Coloma, Michigan. When he was in sixth grade, the family moved to nearby Hartford, where he made lifelong friends, worked at Harding’s, and volunteered on the fire department.

In his senior year at Hartford HS, John met Joan Field, who traveled from Lawrence to take physics class. They dated throughout college years at Southwestern Michigan College and Michigan State University. Throughout this time, John spent several summers in Alaska building cabinets, hunting, and fishing with his brother.

John and Joan married in 1974, just before joining the Peace Corps, where he planned and set up freshwater fish hatcheries in rural Philippines. Friends there became family and stayed in contact since. After two years of service, the couple traveled to several countries, cementing a lifelong yearning for travel before returning to Michigan.

John found a love for surveying and decided to return to MSU to study civil engineering. He worked with road building in Lenawee County before returning to Van Buren County Road Commission in 1984. He took great pride in his work there until his retirement in 2009.

During this time, John also dove headfirst into family life, raising his children, Katie and Ben, with many road trips and camping adventures. He instilled in his children his passions for seeking new knowledge, craftsmanship, and outdoor adventure. John also delighted in feeding his loved ones, whether that meant making waffles, battling for the check at restaurants, or bringing pans of his famous rolls to holidays. He was beloved by at least a hundred nieces, nephews, and siblings on all sides of his family and Joan’s.

Later in retirement, John continued to travel with his family and friends, eventually visiting all 50 states. He especially loved journeying north of the Mackinac Bridge and taking his grandsons, Emmett and Rowan, on road trips to his favorite spots.

Arrangements have been made for Saturday June 20, 2026. Join the family for a visitation and snacks from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 12:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Home in Paw Paw, MI.

Patricia Mary Fake

Patricia Mary Fake passed away June 6, 2026, at the age of 75 from previously undiagnosed cancers.

Patricia was born on February 1, 1951, to John Fake Sr. and Dorothy (Freeman) Fake.

Growing up on her parents' fruit farm in Paw Paw, Patricia and her siblings learned the value of hard work and perseverance from the beginning. Seeing the realities of farm life and family dynamics of the 1950s and 60s forever shaped Patricia and cemented her beliefs in what was right and what was wrong.

Farm life was the igniter of Patty’s incredible passion for animals. From her first pony in childhood to her twenty plus horses throughout her life, Patty had the gift of caring for animals wholeheartedly. Dogs and cats too numerous to list, strays and wild animals all found their savior on earth in Patricia.

Patricia's caring nature was shown to her family by the open door to her home. She was a constant and steady anchor to many. Her phone number never changed, and she would always take your call. Many family members found a bed waiting when needed and a warm hug always. Patty lovingly gave her grandchildren a crocheted blanket at their birth, many to be remade by her after years of love and comfort provided. Patty's signature super soft crocheted hats were given with love each Christmas to family members who’d promise to cherish them and continue to wear them.

Patricia was a lover of all foods spicy. From sweets and snacks to meals, Patty said it needed to have “zip!” or she wasn't having it. A stickler to traditions and recipes, Patty was known for her incredible oatmeal raisin cookies which would often be bestowed upon the lucky on their birthday. And if not cookies, she always would make your favorite meal. That was the way she showed she cared.

Though Patty was truly a homebody, she enjoyed the rare time away from her home and animals. A quick trip to the casino with a friend or vacation with her daughter and grandchildren to the Dominican Republic, a bus trip to Jasper & Glacier National Park with her sister, or the Kentucky Derby with her grandson are all core memories she cherished.

Her love and spirit endure in her son, Timothy (Stacy) Brown; sisters, Connie Ashcraft & Diana Fake; grandchildren, Alexandria Boyer & Garrett Boyer; Theo Brown & Christopher (Ariana) Brown, Austin Lovett, Aiden Robinson & Alivia Robinson and many nieces & nephews. Though most are called by their nickname lovingly bestowed upon them by Patricia.

Patricia has gone to be with her parents, John & Dorothy; her brother, John Jr. and her daughter, Jennifer.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Home, 502 W. Michigan Avenue, Paw Paw. A memorial service will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family for the care of Patricia’s very soon to be born great-grandchild; checks made payable to Alex Boyer.
