🦴 Protect Your Bones: When Should You Get a Bone Density Test?

Did you know that bone loss can happen silently, without pain or obvious symptoms? A bone density test (DEXA scan) is a simple, noninvasive test that helps determine whether your bones are strong or if you may be at risk for osteoporosis and fractures.

🌸 Why is bone health especially important for women?
As estrogen levels decline during and after menopause, women can experience an accelerated loss of bone density.

Talk with your healthcare provider about bone density screening if you:
• Are 65 or older
• Are postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis
• Have a history of fractures
• Have a family history of osteoporosis or hip fractures
• Have certain medical conditions or take medications that can weaken bones

💪 Strong bones are part of healthy aging! Adequate calcium and vitamin D, weight-bearing exercise, avoiding to***co, and limiting excessive alcohol can all support bone health.

Don’t wait for a fracture to find out how healthy your bones are. Talk with your gynecology provider about whether a bone density test is right for you. 💗

🚨 Postmenopausal Bleeding is Not “Normal” 🚨

If you’ve gone 12 months or longer without a menstrual period, any vaginal bleeding or spotting should be evaluated by your healthcare provider.

While postmenopausal bleeding is often caused by non-cancerous conditions, it can also be an early sign of a more serious problem, including uterine (endometrial) cancer. Early evaluation can make all the difference.

✨ Common causes include:
• Vaginal thinning due to low estrogen
• Uterine or cervical polyps
• Hormone therapy
• Endometrial hyperplasia
• Endometrial cancer

Don’t ignore bleeding—even if it only happens once.

At Island Women’s Care, we’re here to provide compassionate care, answer your questions, and help you stay healthy through every stage of life.

📞 Call us today to schedule an evaluation if you’ve experienced any postmenopausal bleeding.

Your health matters. Early evaluation brings peace of mind and, when needed, early treatment. 💙

Before life gets busy, make time for you. 💜

Your annual wellness visit is about so much more than a routine exam—it’s an opportunity to discuss your health, ask questions, review any concerns, and focus on prevention. Whether you’re in your 20s, 40s, or beyond, regular gynecologic care plays an important role in your overall well-being.

During your annual visit, we can:
🌸 Review your health history
🌸 Perform recommended screenings
🌸 Discuss birth control, menopause, or hormone concerns
🌸 Address changes in your menstrual cycle or pelvic health
🌸 Answer any questions you may have in a comfortable, compassionate setting

Don’t wait until something feels wrong to prioritize your health. Preventive care is one of the best investments you can make in yourself.

💗 Know Your Normal. Check Your Breasts. 💗

A monthly self-breast exam is one of the simplest ways to become familiar with your body and notice any changes early. While self-exams do not replace routine mammograms or clinical breast exams, they are an important part of breast health awareness.

When performing a self-exam, look and feel for:
🌸 A new lump or thickening
🌸 Changes in breast size or shape
🌸 Skin dimpling or puckering
🌸 Ni**le discharge (especially if it’s bloody)
🌸 Redness, swelling, or persistent pain

The best time to perform a self-exam is about 3–5 days after your menstrual period ends, when your breasts are least likely to be swollen or tender. If you’ve gone through menopause, choose the same day each month to check.

If you notice any changes, don’t panic—but don’t ignore them either. Contact our office so we can evaluate your concerns.

Your health matters, and early detection can make a difference. 💕
