🐾 Things I Say Every Day as an Animal Chiropractor & Mama

This got me laughing the other day. I was trying to change my "aligator like" 1 year old and as he was rolling away from the diaper I said "whoa!" and then I laughed that I have been adjusting so many horses that is my go to phrase!

At some point during every workday and every mom-day, you'll hear me say:

🤠 "Whoa!" (for horses and babies)

💋 "Kiss for movement." (for a toddler that I need to get his attention or a horse)

😬 "Please don't bite me." (babies, toddlers, dogs, horses, okay when does this one NOT apply??)

🎭 "Are you hurt, or are you being dramatic?" (toddlers, nippy horses, dogs, and maybe sometimes my husband! HA - love you babe!)

✋ "Hold still for just a moment." (all of the above options)

🚨 "That doesn't sound good." (I say this way too much. Moreso for my toddler but it's slipped out when hearing a gnarly case history too!)

It is just too funny....

I'm not always sure whether I'm talking to a horse, a dog, or one of my kids. 😂🐴🐶👧👦

What else have you said to both of your animals and your kids??

Fifteen years ago, my horses were my entire world.

Every spare dollar, every weekend, every early morning and late night revolved around them. Looking back now, I can see that each one taught me something different. Not just about horses, but about the path that eventually led me to animal chiropractic.

One horse struggled with going in to the arena for barrels and poles. Another had behavioral issues that nobody could quite explain and would get super hot at the most random times. Another taught me what happens when a horse is trying so hard to tell you they're uncomfortable, but you don't yet know how to listen.

What amazed me was seeing how chiropractic care could change everything for every horse. Sometimes it wasn't dramatic. Sometimes it was as simple as a horse picking up the correct lead or moving more freely through a turn. Other times it was a horse finally feeling comfortable enough to turn a steer without bucking.

Those experiences planted a seed that eventually became my entire career.
Now it's not my horses that are my world but everyone else's that consume my time and thoughts.

Today, I have a special passion for helping rodeo horses, especially rope horses. These athletes ask so much of their bodies, well actually...WE ask so much of their bodies. And when something isn't quite right, the signs can be subtle until you know what to look for.

Over the next few weeks, I'm going to introduce you to some of the horses that shaped my journey. Each one has a story. Each one taught me a powrful lesson. And each one played a part in why I do what I do today. ❤️

Ever heard of "symptom amnesia"?

I see this ALL the time in both my human and animal patients!

A client walks in and says, "Honestly, I don't think there's been much improvement."

Then five minutes later:

✅ "Well, Sassy is back to jumping on the couch again."
✅ "Toby has been playing with his toys every day."
✅ "Bruno is definitely happier on walks."

Or for human patients:

"I don't think anything has changed."

Followed by:

✅ "Actually, I haven't had a headache since my last visit."
✅ "I'm sleeping through the night now."
✅ "My back didn't bother me during my road trip."

Sound familiar? 😄 It's okay if it does, it's just so common!

The funny thing about pain and discomfort is that once they're gone, it's easy to forget just how much they were affecting your life because now you focus on how great you feel. That's why we set goals and track progress at every visit. Sometimes the biggest improvements happen gradually, and it's helpful to look back and see how far you've come.

When feeling good becomes your new normal, that's not "no change" that's a huge sign of improvement and success. 🎉

So if you've caught yourself saying, "Nothing's different for me," or "maybe I don't need you to adjust fluffy anymore because she is the same".... take a moment to remember where you or your animals started. You might be surprised by just how much progress has happened!

Summer is one of the busiest times of year in my wellness practice, and appointments can fill very quickly. I may tell someone on Tuesday that I have availability, and by Thursday I will all of the sudden be full and booked 3 weeks out.

I have family vacation time planned this summer, so I strongly encourage current wellness clients to schedule ahead and stay consistent with their animal's care. My priority is making sure established wellness patients can stay on schedule and receive the support they need.

I also want to clarify something important about the type of care I provide. My practice is focused on wellness and supportive care. I do not offer emergency or critical medical treatment. If your pet is experiencing an urgent medical issue, injury, severe pain, or anything that could be considered an emergency, your first step should always be to contact your veterinarian or an emergency vet clinic.

I understand that when our pets are hurting, everything can feel urgent. But part of maintaining healthy boundaries in my practice means recognizing that not every urgent request can become an immediate appointment. I receive requests every day asking me to “make an exception,” and while I TRULY empathize, if I accommodated every emergency request, I would never be able to maintain regular hours or properly care for my established clients.

The good news is that many cases still respond very well to supportive care after veterinary evaluation, medication trials, rest, or time to calm inflammation. I routinely see pets several weeks after an issue begins who still make wonderful progress with care.

We live in a world that often expects immediate solutions, but healing is not instant and neither is access to specialized wellness care during the busiest season of the year.

I have intentionally built my practice in a way that allows me to serve my clients well while also protecting time with my own family. One of my personal priorities is being home for bedtime with my kids, and I appreciate your understanding and respect for those boundaries.

Thank you all for planning ahead, trusting me with your pets’ wellness care, and supporting my small family-centered business this summer!

Shoutout to my client Lucy at K9 Smiles 🐾✨

One thing I love about what she does is offering anesthesia-free dog teeth cleaning. This is especially useful for younger pups as a preventive measure or up to 8 for older pups or dogs that get super anxious with traditional procedures. ❤️

For many pet parents, the thought of putting their dog under anesthesia can feel stressful, particularly for pups with health concerns. K9 Smiles offers a gentler alternative focused on comfort, care, and keeping those tails wagging. 🦷🐶

Clean teeth, fresher breath, and a less stressful experience for dogs who may not tolerate anesthesia well? THAT'S A WIN!!

If your furry best friend hates the vet or you just want more options for preventive dental cleanings definitely check her out. 🙌

You can contact her at 385 - 312 - 0054

My favorite part of every session.

I was talking to another chiropractor today about how it STILL catches me off guard sometimes…
just how instantly they can change.

And that’s coming from someone who’s seen this THOUSANDS of times!

It surprises me every time, but in a good way.
In contrast, I also know, without a doubt, they’re going to feel better and move better the more I see them.

Watching these old guys melt like this and let go of years of tension…
yeah, it never gets old 🥹

Before >>>>>> AFTER!

This guy is feeling amazing after his first adjustment this week!

He is in his 20's and is a retired bull do***ng horse.

Can you tell someone was always leaning off of the right side??

I have people ALL the time ask why horses need adjustments OR they tell me that they have been (insert event here) doing great on their horse for years. Just because they are not in visible pain does not mean that their body is not still changing and working from an area of dysfunction.

This is a huge example of what happens over years and year of time with a repetitive type of movement. This is why wellness adjustments for these performance animals is pivotal!!
