A few minutes after my boyfriend proposed, I asked, “do my parents know?” I couldn’t wait to tell them that he was joining our family. 💍
Britton said, “well, I called your dad to ask for his blessing, but that was weeks ago. They don’t know that today is the day.”
“What did my dad say when you asked?”
My (now) husband kinda shrugged, “marriage is a big deal, we seem to have our heads on straight, they are happy for us, and then he gave some advice.”
“That’s all you have for me?!” I’m a person who likes details. “How long was the conversation?”
“About 30 minutes.”
“Your kidding?!!!” My dad is the stereotypical engineer who uses minimal words as if each one costs money.
“Nope.”
I probed Britton for more details, but all I got was that my parents were proud of my independence and that shouldn’t be changed in marriage.
What I would give for a recording of that conversation! Priceless. The thought brings tears to my eyes. Maybe I'll ask my dad and get his side of the story after all these years.
When I hear this song, I think it would have been great advice for my dad to give. Other than liking trash t.v. and having a hard time taking compliments, this song fits me perfectly. Maybe some of this advice was included in my dad's 30 minutes... among the financial and long-term planning guidance that I’m certain was given. 😉
The thing is, you can plan out your future on paper all you want, but if you don’t do all the sweet stuff too... all those plans might not be needed.
What’s the best marriage advice you’ve ever gotten or given?
