New routines, new expectations, new friendships, and sometimes a few big feelings along the way.

If your family is finding its rhythm, you don’t have to figure it all out at once.

Feeding your baby is vital, and so is taking care of your mind. 🤍

Happy National Breastfeeding Month! For National WIC Breastfeeding Week (Aug 1–7), we’re shining a light on the incredible families, peer counselors, and providers who show up for this work every single day.

So much of this labor happens behind the scenes with far too little recognition. To every parent navigating this season: give yourself grace. Your effort matters, but your mental health matters just as much. We’re in your corner!

When pioneer Bebe Moore Campbell advocated for this month, she envisioned a world where marginalized communities could seek care without shame, explanation, or erasure. Healing for us isn't just about individual self-care, it’s about collective ease. It’s about putting down heavy expectations we were never meant to carry alone and finding care that honors our roots.

As we move into August, keep this close:

Rest isn't a reward you have to earn.

Culturally responsive support is a basic right, not a privilege.

Healing isn't a performance. Soft moments count just as much as major breakthroughs.

Let’s connect: What is one gentle boundary or habit you’re carrying with you into the new month? We’d love to hold space with you.

There is straightforward physiology behind why extreme heat elevates agitation, shortens tempers, and drains focus:

Biological Stress Response: When your body works in overdrive to regulate temperature, your nervous system responds similarly to a threat. Heart rate rises and cortisol spikes, which your brain interprets as anxiety or physical tension.

Neurotransmitter Disruption: High ambient heat impairs the regulation of serotonin and dopamine, lowering your natural threshold for frustration and distress tolerance.

Sleep Architecture Breakdown: High night temperatures prevent your core body temperature from dropping, which is required for deep REM sleep. You start the day with compromised cognitive bandwidth before you even step outside.

Recognizing heat as a physical stressor makes it easier to understand why minor frustrations feel magnified right now.

📍 Local Atlanta Cooling Resources
If you or anyone in your neighborhood needs a safe, temperature-controlled space or hydration, here are active local resources:

Official City Cooling Center: Selena S. Butler Park (98 William Holmes Borders Senior Dr NE) operates as an active cooling station stocked with bottled water.

Fulton County Public Libraries: Free, air-conditioned, public sanctuaries open during peak afternoon heat hours.

Atlanta Fire Rescue Hydration Stations: Local fire stations across the city provide water and hydration support.

City Splashpads: Open daily (10 a.m. – 8 p.m.) at Historic Fourth Ward, Cook Park, D.H. Stanton, Perkerson Park, Center Hill, and Rev. James Orange Park.

Immediate Referrals: Dial or text 2-1-1 (United Way of Greater Atlanta) to find neighborhood-specific emergency cooling locations and shelter support.

Stay hydrated, stay inside during peak UV hours when possible, and check in on high-risk neighbors and pets.

What your child needs most during big transitions isn’t perfection—it’s a steady anchor. ⚓️ Being an anchor means:

Validating their fears without rushing to "fix" everything instantly.

Slowing down your own breath when morning routines feel chaotic.

Giving yourself grace when the mental load starts to feel heavy.

And if your child or teen is struggling to process the upcoming shift, they don't have to carry it alone either. Savannah McFarlin at Arise Renewed Counseling offers specialized adolescent sessions to give young people a safe, supportive space to express themselves and build healthy coping tools.

✨ We offer both in-person and virtual sessions for parents, teens, and individuals.

If you or your young one need a soft, grounded place to land this season, tap the link in our bio to connect with us. 🤍

When your body is wired for defense, slowing down doesn't feel peaceful—it feels unsafe. That's why traditional "relaxation" can bring up anxiety instead of calm.

Honoring National Minority Mental Health Month means moving beyond performative self-care toward true nervous system regulation:

Micro-rests: 2-minute breath breaks instead of forcing an hour of quiet meditation.

Co-regulation: Being in the physical presence of people who make you feel completely safe.

Unmasking: Spending time in spaces where you don't have to filter your speech, tone, or appearance.

Weekend Reflection: Real rest isn't about doing "nothing"—it's about doing whatever lets your body know it is safe right now.

Too often, minority communities are praised for how much stress, pressure, and systemic friction they can endure without complaining. But constantly being the "strong one," the "reliable one," or the "provider" leaves zero room to actually rest.

You don't have to earn rest by reaching a point of total collapse. You're allowed to lower your shoulders today simply because you're human.

Summer brings its own unique mental health pressures: broken routines, childcare chaos, body image triggers, heat fatigue, and the relentless pressure to make every single weekend "count." If Monday morning feels heavy instead of bright, don't add guilt on top of what you're already carrying.

Your struggles don't magically pause just because the sun is out.

Take a deep breath, drop your shoulders away from your ears, and give yourself permission to just take today one hour at a time.

What’s one small way you can treat yourself with extra kindness today? 👇
