One of the most common conditions I treat in my practice is one that often gets overlooked until it becomes a real problem — venous insufficiency.
Here's what's happening: the tiny valves inside your leg veins, which push blood back up to your heart, stop functioning properly. Blood pools in the lower legs, creates pressure, and that's what drives the symptoms my patients describe every day.
Common symptoms include:
Leg swelling, especially after long periods of standing or sitting
An aching, heavy, or tired feeling in the legs — particularly by late afternoon
Visible varicose veins or rope-like vessels under the skin
Skin changes near the ankles — darkening, thickening, or a leathery texture
In more advanced cases, venous ulcers near the lower leg or ankle
Treatment ranges from compression therapy and lifestyle changes to minimally invasive procedures like RFA or sclerotherapy — most with very little downtime.
If you've been living with heavy, swollen, or aching legs and wondering whether it's "normal" — it isn't, and it doesn't have to stay that way.
