Tennessee received approximately $206.9 million in first-year federal funding to transform rural healthcare

The state has now announced award selections across five Rural Health Transformation grant programs. Of 73 selections, a mere ~16% are organizations actually based in rural Tennessee communities.

In the 33 million dollar Short-Range Health Technology grant alone, 50% of the award recipients are headquartered outside Tennessee.

There is painful irony here—the disparity we see in these award selections echoes the disparity rural Tennessee has experienced in healthcare for decades: the communities with the greatest needs too often have the fewest resources and the smallest voice in determining where those resources go.

Rural Tennessee does not lack ideas, determination, or people willing to do the work. Too often, what these communities have lacked are the resources to build the healthcare systems their communities deserve.

That is why we are working so hard to build Pelham Medical.

Rural healthcare shouldn’t just be delivered to rural Tennessee. It should be built in rural Tennessee and shaped by the people who call these communities home.

Dr. Lydia White was honored to attend the annual Tennessee FFA Ham Breakfast and speak with elected officials about Pelham Medical and the urgent need for greater access to healthcare in Grundy County and our surrounding rural communities.

A lot of paperwork. A lot of late nights. And a whole lot of hope.

Each of these grant applications represents an opportunity to bring better healthcare and more resources home to Grundy County.

We don’t know which doors will open—but we believe our community is worth knocking on every single one.

Now we wait, pray, and keep working.

It’s hard to put into words what it feels like to see dirt moving on the future home of Pelham Medical.

We are so grateful to everyone who has encouraged us, supported us, and believed in this vision along the way.
