A tiny kitten needed help, and Carrollyn, a member of the Bergin College staff, could not leave her behind.

She brought the little rescue to campus, where the kitten found a warm place to land—and an unexpected friend in Erin, our gentle Campus Dog.

Our dog came close and softly nudged the kitten with her moist nose. It was a small moment, but one that made everyone nearby smile: a big dog, a tiny kitten, and the quiet kindness that can pass between them.

At Bergin College of Canine Studies, we are surrounded by dogs every day. They remind us to slow down, pay attention, and make room for those who need care.
Dogs are unconditional and unbiased. We hope to be like them too.

Love knows no species.

A Service Dog can open a door, retrieve a phone, create space in a crowd, or offer steadiness when the world feels uncertain.
But the most important thing a service dog may do is harder to measure.

A dog can help a person move through the world with greater independence—and change the way the world meets them. A glance becomes a conversation. A doorway becomes an invitation. A person is seen not for a limitation, but as a neighbor, colleague, friend, and full participant in the life around them.

That is the shared experience at the heart of service-dog work.
The dog serves one person. But the relationship can enrich a family, a workplace, a community, and the wider world around it.

In the Associate of Science in Assistance Dog Education, everything you’ve lived quietly turns into something profoundly practical and yet meaningful : build human–canine partnerships that restore confidence, dignity, and true independence.

Beside puppies like little Oats in this photo, you learn Bonnie Bergin’s pioneering approach to puppy enrichment and education—how careful hands, thoughtfully shaped environments, and steady presence influence who an Assistance Dog becomes for the person who will one day lean on them. Your story teaches you empathy. Your training gives you skills. Together, they become the way two lives learn to stand steadier side by side.

When teams like you—humans and dogs shaped by all of this—go out into the world and work, the impact is real: people who once felt limited discover new freedom and the courage to move through life with a trusted partner at their side.

I’m Erin. I’m 5, and I live on the Bergin Canyonville campus in Oregon.
------------------------------------------------------
I trained for Service Dog work, but chasing squirrels felt too fun to give up—
so instead of calling me a failure, they made me the campus dog.

My home is 14 acres of trees, sunshine, and soft grass.
In the mornings, light spills over the hills,
dew sparkles on the lawns,
and the air smells like pine, clean earth, and fresh beginnings.
Students step out of cozy dorms and on‑campus apartments
straight onto paths where birds sing and dogs wag.

From my favorite spot near the BERGIN CAMPUS sign,
I watch everything, including the squirrels.

Puppies bouncing through the grass with loose, happy bodies.
Training dogs walking calmly under tall trees,
tails relaxed, ears soft, eyes bright as they glance up at their humans.
Sometimes the whole group bursts into laughter
when a pup gets the zoomies;
sometimes they fall quiet with pride
when a nervous dog takes one brave step forward.

My human dad used to live in those loud city places—
crowded streets, bars on every corner,
air so busy it made both our noses and minds tired.

He tells me this campus feels different:
like a peaceful retreat built for dogs and humans to learn together,
breathe easier, and finally hear their own hearts again.

If you want bright lights, constant noise, and city smells, this isn’t your place.
But if you want a beautiful, safe campus wrapped in nature,
where Human-Canine partnership is the center of every day,
and where dogs are teammates who truly love their work,
come here.

I’m Erin, the campus dog, and every wag of my tail says the same thing:
for humans and dogs who want to learn, laugh, and belong,
this campus is home.
