An old injury showing up again doesn’t automatically mean you’re injured again, but it’s not something you should ignore. 👀
When a runner tells me, “My old knee injury is starting to bother me again,” here are three things I want to know:
1️⃣ What changed?
Mileage, pace, hills, frequency, strength training, or recovery? Sometimes the injury isn’t what changed—the demands placed on your body did.
2️⃣ Is your body ready for the new demand?
Your cardiovascular system may be ready for more, while your strength, mobility, coordination, tissues, or movement patterns need more preparation. Being able to run farther doesn’t always mean your entire body is ready to absorb the extra demand.
3️⃣ What is your body telling you?
Recurring pain isn’t something to fear, but it is valuable information. The goal isn’t to avoid every limitation. It’s to understand your body well enough to safely build more capacity. 💪
If you’re training for a fall race and an old ache starts speaking up, don’t panic, but don’t automatically push through it either.
Get curious. What changed, and what is your body asking for? 🏃♀️🏃♂️
