BE A STRONG ADVOCATE
One of my scariest moments as a caregiver came the day that I got a call from the aide who sat with Mom, who told me my mother had fallen in the tub. The aide, a lovely lady, sat with Mom while I worked. She was a “stand-by” assistant to make sure Mom was safe and had what she needed.
But following hospitalization and rehabilitation, Mom’s needs changed. She now needed hands-on, nearly total care, which the aide was not equipped to do. After a few days, I realized we needed to make serious changes. Following a series of conversations, changes in caregivers and in home health care agencies, we finally got the right help for my mother. It took time and it was a frustrating process. But it was worth it. The only thing that mattered was Mom’s safety and comfort.
As family caregivers, we may be the only real voice to speak out for the best interest of our loved ones.
To all family caregivers I say, "Keep up the good work!" And remember, you're not in this alone!" 😚
