When does back pain need an MRI?
Short answer: most of the time, it doesn't.
But some signs change everything, and knowing them matters.
Most back pain is muscular. That sharp pain after lifting, twisting, or sleeping wrong? It almost always clears up in 2 to 4 weeks with movement, heat, and time. Morning stiffness that loosens after 30 minutes of moving around is normal too.
In these cases, an MRI usually finds nothing helpful, and sometimes finds something random that leads to extra appointments you didn't need.
Here's when to pay attention:
* Numbness, tingling, or weakness running down your leg (especially below the knee) β time to get imaging.
** New loss of bowel or bladder control β this is NOT an MRI appointment. Go to the ER, right now.
