Your Next Meal Is More Important Than the Last One

Have you ever thought:

"I already blew it today, so I might as well keep eating?"

I certainly have.

The problem with that thinking is that one unplanned choice turns into a whole day, a whole weekend, or sometimes much longer.

Recovery teaches us something different.

The next meal is a brand-new opportunity.

Not tomorrow.
Not Monday.
Not after you've gained more weight.

The next meal.

You don't have to be perfect to make a better choice.

You just have to start where you are.

One meal.
One prayer.
One day at a time.

That's how lasting change happens.

One thing that has helped me tremendously is deciding ahead of time when I'll eat and then avoiding extra food in between meals.

Have you ever felt like giving up?

Giving up on your weight loss goals.
Giving up on recovery.
Giving up on yourself.

Years ago, when I was active in Overeaters Anonymous, there was a saying I never forgot:

**"Don't give up before the miracle happens."**

That saying meant a lot to me because my own recovery didn't happen overnight. It took me nearly two years to find abstinence from my binge foods.

Looking back, recovery was already happening. I was learning healthier habits, growing spiritually, attending meetings, serving others, and gradually losing weight. But the breakthrough I wanted took longer than I expected.

Thankfully, I stayed.

In this week's podcast, Tony and I talk about discouragement, why it is not from God, and what to do when you feel like quitting.

If you've been feeling discouraged lately, I hope you'll give it a listen.

**Don't give up before the miracle happens.**

Many people believe they would lose weight if they could just stay motivated.

But motivation comes and goes.

If lasting weight loss depended on motivation, very few people would succeed.

The people who lose weight and keep it off aren't motivated all the time. They simply learn to do the next right thing whether they feel like it or not.

They plan their meals when they don't feel like it.
They attend meetings when they don't feel like it.
They pray when they don't feel like it.
They follow their food plan when they don't feel like it.

The secret isn't motivation.

It's consistency.

One meal.
One decision.
One day at a time.

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." β€” Galatians 6:9 (NIV)

β€œIf you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.” John 15:7 (NKJV)

Jesus is telling us here that if we are actively and continuously connected to Him, that our desires will also be in alignment with His. Therefore, when we are abiding in Him, we can confidently ask Him for what we desire and know that it will be done for us. When our will and God’s will are in alignment, we can be sure that it will be done for us.

Therefore, the encouragement is to stay with Him and follow Him in all His ways. Ask Him for things that are His will for us. He wants to give us His best.

Dear Lord Jesus, Help me to abide in You fully. I ask that You help me make a food plan and action plan that will help me to feed my body to be nourished and fully healthy today. Thank You that I can trust that You will grant me the desires of my heart today. Amen.

🌟 Step 7: We Humbly Turn to God 🌟

One of the biggest mistakes many of us make is believing we can overcome overeating through sheer willpower.

We promise ourselves we'll do better tomorrow.
We'll be stronger next time.
We'll finally get it right.

But recovery isn't about becoming strong enough on our own.

Step 7 reminds us that we cannot overcome sin and temptation on our own. We need God's help.

Whether our struggle is overeating, emotional eating, dishonesty, pride, fear, resentment, or self-reliance, lasting change begins when we stop trying to fix ourselves and start depending on Him.

The good news is that God already made a way for us through Jesus Christ. He loved us enough to send His Son to die for our sins, and because He first loved us, we desire to follow Him and honor Him with our lives.

None of us will do this perfectly. Recovery is not about perfection. It's about surrender.

Every day we have another opportunity to turn toward God, ask for His help, and take the next right step.

Imagine the freedom that comes from no longer carrying the burden alone.

What might change if you stopped trying to do it all yourself and allowed God to help?

πŸ’› Recovery begins with humility, but it grows through God's grace.

Have you ever told yourself:

πŸ‘‰ "I'll start over Monday."
πŸ‘‰ "I'll do better next month."
πŸ‘‰ "I've already messed up, so what's the point?"

The good news is that God specializes in new beginnings.

You don't have to wait for a new week, a new month, or a new year.

You can start again today.

Learn from yesterday, but don't live there. God's mercies are new every morning, and His grace is available right now.

"Put off your old self... be made new... put on the new self, created to be like God." β€” Ephesians 4:22-24

❀️ Yesterday is over. Today is a new opportunity to walk with God and make the next right choice.

**The Photo I Never Turned In**

Sometimes overeating costs us more than our health.

Years ago, our church was putting together a church directory and families were invited to have professional photos taken. We had ours done, and the photographer did a good job. But when I saw the pictures, all I could see was my weight.

At the time, I was nearly 100 pounds overweight. I hated how my face looked in the photos. The photographer kindly offered to adjust the lighting, but there was no changing the fact that I was carrying far more weight than I wanted to be.

I was so embarrassed that I never submitted the photo.

At the time, I couldn't imagine putting that picture in a church directory for everyone to see.

Looking back, I don't regret not submitting the photo. What I regret is not doing something about my weight sooner. I wish I had gotten help before the shame became so overwhelming.

It was a loss not to have that photo as a memory of our family during that season of life. But the bigger loss was living with so much shame that I felt I needed to hide.

Maybe you can relate.

If your struggle with food or weight has left you feeling discouraged, embarrassed, or stuck, please don't wait as long as I did. There is no shame in asking for help. In fact, asking for help may be one of the bravest things you'll ever do.

Why do we turn to food when we're stressed, lonely, overwhelmed, or discouraged?

In this week's podcast, Tony and I talk about the deeper reasons behind emotional eating and comfort eating. We also discuss why isolation often makes things worse and what we can learn from King David about bringing our emotions honestly to God.

If you've ever used food to cope with difficult feelings, I think this episode will encourage you.

When life hurts, food can start looking like a solution.

Not because you're weak.

Not because you don't know better.

But because food is quick, familiar, and always available.

The problem is that food can distract us from pain for a few minutes, but it can't heal it.

God can.

If you're going through a difficult season right now, don't carry it alone.

Talk to God.

Talk to someone you trust.

Stay connected.

Isolation and overeating often grow together.

Healing usually begins when we bring our struggles into the light.

"Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." β€” Galatians 6:2
