30 years and going strong!! 🎉🎉 Thirty years ago today, The Antioch Group opened it's doors with the belief that mental health care should be about lives over numbers and should be delivered in a way that brings honor to God and recognizes the dignity and value of each individual life we have the honor to serve.

Thirty years later, we are so thankful to every person who has allowed us to care for them or for their family members, to every organization that has entrusted their clients to us for their care, and to the Central Illinois community that we are so proud to call home.

Thank you from all of us for letting us walk alongside you throughout the years! We are deeply grateful for 30 years, and can't wait to get started on 30 more! 🩵🩵🩵

At our last Monday staff meeting, our own Dr. Steven Hamon and Jessie Miller, LCSW shared pictures and experiences from their recent humanitarian trip to Ukraine, delivering vital mental health training, education, amd hope to healthcare and humanitarian workers there. Dr. Hamon also spent time speaking with gravely wounded soldiers and was honored by Healing Hearts Ukraine for his contributions over the past several years. We are so proud of them and their willingness to live out a call to service to those in need, and The Antioch Group is thankful to 🇺🇦

Happy Father’s Day from all of us at The Antioch Group.

Today, we honor all dads and father figures—fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, adoptive fathers, foster fathers, fathers-in-law, godfathers, spiritual fathers, mentors, and the men who show up with steady love, guidance, protection, wisdom, and care.

We also hold space for those for whom this day is tender, including those grieving a father, longing to be a father, navigating complicated relationships, or carrying the ache of loss.

May today be filled with gratitude, connection, comfort, and peace.

Today, we honor Juneteenth—a day of freedom, remembrance, resilience, and hope.

As we reflect on the long journey toward justice and healing, may we also remember that emotional wellness is deeply connected to dignity, belonging, safety, and community.

May this day invite reflection, compassion, and continued commitment to creating spaces where every person is seen, valued, and free to thrive.

Being alive at all is the most extraordinary stroke of good luck any of us will ever experience, the physicist Alan Lightman writes. He explores the ordinary miracle of human existence: https://theatln.tc/1DR5x8LF

Over the span of less than a century, discoveries in astronomy and biology have expanded our perspective almost beyond comprehension—if not as individuals, then at least as a civilization. “We have learned that our solar system sits on the outskirts of an enormous galaxy of a hundred billion stars called the Milky Way,” Lightman writes. “And the size of our galaxy is practically inconceivable … The mind reels from trying to imagine such expanse.” Humans have also enlarged their concept of time in the cosmos: “Against this backdrop of history, on Earth and in the cosmos, our individual lives are brief flickers in the chasms of time.”

“It is hard to imagine such a cavernous theater we find ourselves in,” Lightman writes. “But it is even more difficult to fathom how unique each of us is, how improbable, how lucky to be alive at all … Yet it is the easiest to overlook, to take for granted. We wake up in the morning, have our coffee, make breakfast, send the kids off to school, go to our jobs, move through our routines, worry about deadlines, check off items on our to-do list. And we forget that beneath all of it lies something profoundly rare: existence itself.”

“The simple fact that we are here, conscious and aware, is so unlikely that it borders on the miraculous. Because we experience that miracle every day, we treat it as ordinary, even guaranteed, mostly unnoticed at all. We postpone joy, assuming there will always be more time. We don’t see the beauty in small moments. We simply go about the business of life, without taking a second to notice life itself.”

“We could not have had this grand perspective as recently as a century ago,” Lightman continues at the link. “So the question is: What are we to make of the fantastically improbable fact of our existence, our moment of life?”

You are *not* your impulses ✨️

Difficulty with impulse control, whether in communication with others, one's relationship with food, substance use, shopping, or any other part of life, can leave a person feeling hopeless, defeated, and broken.

Enter URGE SURFING! Urge surfing is a mindfulness-based technique that can help you retrain your response to impulse triggers. When practiced over time, it can help reshape your response to triggers and give a greater sense of freedom and control.

This graphic gives a great introduction to this technique, but if you'd like to get some support in your goals and to learn more tools like this, give us a call and let us help you get on the road to a healthier and more balanced life!

Most people think they have to fight their urges.

The urge to send that message.
The urge to check again.
The urge to react in anger.
The urge to overthink.
The urge to give in to a habit they are trying to break.

But what if the secret is not fighting the urge at all?

Every urge is like a wave. It rises, reaches a peak, and then falls away. The problem is that many people act while they are in the middle of the wave, believing the feeling will last forever.

It will not.

The strongest urges are often temporary. Learning to pause, breathe, and ride them out can change relationships, improve mental health, and help people regain control over their choices.

Someone may need this reminder today. Share it. 🌊

June is PTSD Awareness Month, which makes this a good time to share a clear, reliable resource.

The VA’s National Center for PTSD has plain-language information about trauma, PTSD symptoms, treatment options, and ways to support someone who may be struggling: www.ptsd.va.gov.

One important note: not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD. And a social media post cannot diagnose anyone. But if someone’s life still feels strongly affected by something frightening, overwhelming, or deeply painful, it is reasonable to seek professional support. Understanding what is happening can be a meaningful first step. With providers who specialize in trauma, PTSD, and EMDR, we at The Antioch Group are able to provide high-quality care for those who may be struggling.
