π Water Safety Tips for Summer π
Drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death for children ages 1β4 β and it can happen silently and in seconds. Here are some simple steps you can take to help protect your child this summer:
Tip #1: Build Layers of Protection
β
Fences around pools (4-sided, 4ft tall, self-latching)
β
Locked doors and gates
β
Remove containers that can fill with water (buckets, coolers, wading pools)
β
Supervision within armβs reach
β
US Coast Guardβapproved life jackets near natural water
Tip #2: Supervision Matters Most
β
Always stay within armβs reach of toddlers near water
β
Avoid distractions β no phones, chores, or multitasking
β
Designate a responsible βWater Watcherβ for each child
Tip #3: Swim Lessons & Life Jackets Save Lives
β
Start swim lessons when your child is developmentally ready
β
Use life jackets near lakes, rivers, and pools β even for strong swimmers
Tip #4: Know What to Do in an Emergency
β
Initiate CPR if needed
β
Call 911 immediately
β
Keep rescue equipment nearby
β
Talk to your pediatrician about water safety at your next visit
Tip #5: Check the Water First
β
If a child is missing, look for him or her in the water first!
π‘ Most child drownings happen during non-swim times, when a child slips away unnoticed. Creating barriers and staying vigilant can save lives.
