I mean what?! It’s like God created all these little love notes in our brains and science is just catching up. This amazes me so much. And this is only a small fraction of what happens in the brain, not to mention the rest of the body at the cellular level in the muscles, bones, joints, blood sugar, mitochondria, etc.

And please swipe to the end if you didn’t. This isn’t anti-medicine. Just pro- the best and original medicine. For both kids and 100 year olds alike.

It’s why at home our school days are structured around movement. Why it’s important to find the time not wait for the time. Manage your body well. šŸ¤

Did you know your brain releases all of these when you exercise?

Share this with yourself to reference when you need the motivation. Share with someone who you want to hear it.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, and I’m leaving out some of the embarrassing ones. We love it when our clients come to us with super specific goals.

The more specific you get, the more we can tailor your treatment to help you with that one thing. šŸ¤

Pain has a way of convincing us that less movement is the answer. And hearing the words ā€œosteoarthritisā€ , ā€œbone on boneā€ and ā€œwear and tearā€ can add to unnecessary fear at worst and wrong beliefs at best.

Everyone reading this likely has some level of arthritis in their knee, shoulder, hip or spine. Arthritis is just like wrinkles on our skin or gray hair. But when it’s paired with pain we often become worried about over using that joint.

Sometimes rest is necessary but mostly for overuse injuries. Rarely for arthritis. But when rest turns into weeks or months of avoiding movement, your body starts adapting to inactivity instead of healing. And we get stuck in the cycle of pain āž”ļø hurts to move āž”ļø limit movement āž”ļø pain gets worse/arthritis can get worse.

The goal of rehab isn’t to ignore pain or push through it.

It’s to teach your body that movement is safe again. šŸ’„

Your body was designed with an incredible ability to adapt. With the right kind of movement, it becomes stronger, more resilient, and more capable over time.

Don’t let pain or the diagnosis of arthritis convince you your world has to get smaller.

And another one of my favorite questions- how can I faithful care for the people and things you have entrusted to me today?

And expect that He will answer. Sometimes we think prayer is just asking God for things. I think honestly we don’t ask Him questions because we don’t think He will answer.

How might your days change if you remember the body he gave you was given by Him to carry out the purposes He has for you. To let your gifts advance the kingdom.

The first 2 topics require a nuanced conversation and assessment between you and your provider. Lauren and Tricia are our 2 pelvic floor physical therapists and love helping women see what their body is actually capable of, get back to all the things they love and educate on what is actually normal and what’s not.

Myth: you can’t strength train during pregnancy.

You can. Theres so much exciting research coming out and being done on this specific topic. ACOG’s own guidelines say healthy pregnant women should include resistance training, not just walking and prenatal yoga. The outdated advice to go easy or stop lifting altogether isn’t based on current evidence. Your body was built to adapt and get stronger, not shut down.

Myth: you can’t jump if you have a prolapse.

It’s more nuanced than that. Jumping can increase downward pressure on the pelvic floor, and research shows high impact movement can aggravate prolapse symptoms for some women. But the research also says the threshold is different for every body. That’s not a blanket ban, that’s a reason to get assessed and build a plan specific to you instead of quitting movement out of fear.

Myth: just cross your legs when you sneeze, that’s normal.

Leaking when you sneeze is common. It is not normal, and it’s definitely not something you have to just live with. Studies show a huge number of women assume this is just part of being female or part of aging and never seek treatment because of it. Common and normal are not the same thing. This is treatable.

Your body is worth understanding. Not just managing and assuming something is true because your friends’ neighbor said so.

Bet you didn’t expect me to say that last one! šŸ˜³šŸ™‚ I’m sure others in cash pay would disagree but I don’t think that all cash pay PTs are ā€œbetterā€ than insurance based PTs- it’s just that we’re not limited in the ways that insurance based PTs are.

Vitality was born out of the frustration I experienced always feeling like I was limited in how I could treat due to insurance restrictions. Time, productivity standards, visit limits, constant need for supporting documentation, prior-auth. And my patients weren’t making the progress I knew they were capable of.

And here’s a short story about me not understanding the patient side of insurance despite having had worked in the system for 10 years…. I still got blindsided.

After I had my son, I went through pelvic floor PT for myself. And he needed PT too. The clinic I chose was in network (I worked this system). I did everything ā€œright.ā€ And months later, bills showed up that I did not see coming.

I thought I understood my deductible and copay but I didn’t. If didn’t fully understand what I owed going in, and I work in this field, I know most people don’t stand a chance.

This is why at Vitality we want to be as transparent as possible and you know the price before you start.

Swipe through for the stuff we find most people don’t understand. Save this for the next time someone tells you ā€œjust check if they take your insurance.ā€ šŸ‘€

Stop letting your MRI findings dictate how your body feels.

Countless times I have had people come in terrified because they read their MRI report and it sounds terrible. Or incidental findings for another issue reveal a meniscus tear or disc herniation although they don’t have pain in that particular area- but now they’re worried about that.

Or too often people wait to exercise, attend physical therapy or do anything beneficial at all until they have an MRI.

Yes, there absolutely is a place for them. Especially when it comes to major injuries, accidents, acute injuries etc. But most often I spend sessions ā€œundoing the damageā€ and reeducating on what actually matters.

Studies have found:
About 23% of people under 30 with real, injury related back pain had a completely normal MRI.

87.6% of pain-free people had a bulging disc in the neck, including 73.3% of men and 78% of women in their 20s.

Disc bulges found in 30% of pain-free 20 year olds, and 84% of pain-free 80 year olds. Disc degeneration found in 37% of pain-free 20 year olds, and 96% of pain-free 80 year olds.

65.4% of people found to have a rotator cuff tear had no shoulder symptoms at all.

73% of pain-free 65 year olds had a meniscal tear on MRI.

34% of pain-free shoulders had a rotator cuff tear on MRI, climbing to 54% in people over 60.

Only 36% of 98 pain-free people had a completely normal spine. Most had a bulge or protrusion.
