Born and raised a Toledoan, I've spent the day trying to figure out what the right words are to express my thoughts surrounding the tragic events that occurred at the Old West End Festival yesterday and the truth is there are no right words. Countless lives have been forever altered by the decisions of a few. This festival that has always brought joy and comfort to the Toledo Area and will no longer feel exactly the same. Many people were injured physically and countless were injured emotionally. One small act (negative, positive, or otherwise) ripples. Not only the injured were impacted, the people who saw injuries, the people that heard shots, the people that saw others running, the people that live in those houses, the first responders, the people who couldn't get ahold of their loved ones and were watching the news unfold not knowing if their loved ones were okay, the people of the Toledo Area as a whole who have watched tragedy strike.
To the victims, festival goers, homeowners, festival workers, food truck owners, first responders, and anyone else involved please know that your multitude of feelings are valid. You may find yourself experiencing sadness, grief, anger, confusion among many others. As humans we grieve any loss of normalcy. The events at the festival last night forced people far and wide in the area and outside of the area into loss of normalcy and feelings of loss of safety. You are seen, you are cared for, you are enough. Feelings are very real and are meant to be felt. What we do with our emotions and how we act on them is where we can choose healthy and safe outlets. If you find yourself struggling please reach out. I chose the name Mourning Glory Counseling, based on the flower which represents life, death, and most importantly the ability to start anew each day and to be resilient. Each day will be a fresh start with mixed emotions and that is okay.
I am taking new clients at my practice currently. I accept most insurances and provide sliding scale. I am also linking other local counseling centers as resources as well. Your mental health matters. It's okay that this is different because this IS different. Remember to use your support and seek help if you need to. You are more than worth it!

: The Memory Tree by Joanna Rowland (an elementary school teacher) with illustrations by Thea Baker - recommended by ADEC volunteer and FT Kailey Bradley

Grief is hard any time of year, but during the holiday season grief naturally feels heavier and more difficult to navigate. In The Memory Tree, the author describes a child's experience of a recent death. She shares that the holiday lights don't seem to shine as brightly and celebrations don't feel merry. Still, her family find ways to commemorate their lost loved one through the decoration of a special Memory Tree.
This lovely and timely book is a wonderful resource that provides comfort for younger children and grieving families during the holiday season. I appreciated that the tradition described in the book involves entire families, which provides ideas and simple opportunities for sharing memories and stories together.

From the ADEC Communications Team: In addition to the Memory Tree, the same author and illustrator also collaborated on The Memory Box book, which offers creative activities around remembering as well as some grief education. Both titles would make lovely gifts.

This was one of the most informative and coolest experiences I’ve had. I learned so much information, much of which are answers to questions I get as a grief counselor regularly. Gaining information about things that seem very scary can often times help! Understanding these processes are very important! Death education is very important! I love that part of my career!

November is Children's Grief Awareness Month. All month long, we are bringing awareness to childhood bereavement and the many ways we can support children and teens who are grieving.

Join us by following along, sharing our posts, and spreading the word to others. Together, we can help create a more grief-informed society and ensure no child grieves alone.

Huge thank you to our friends at the NACG National Alliance for Children's Grief and the steering committee for leading the efforts to provide educational resources and share stories highlighting the importance of grief awareness.
