I am a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with fellowship training in total joint replacement surgery. My practice focuses on treat

ing hip and knee osteoarthritis, painful or problematic hip and knee replacements, as well as total joint replacements for post-traumatic arthritis and other complex hip and knee deformities and degenerative conditions. My passion for orthopaedics is rooted in restoring function, relieving pain, and returning normalcy to my patient’s lives. I believe in treating my patients as I would my own family and I know the importance of effective communication and patient education. Whether it's your first time needing a hip or a knee replacement or you have had problems or dissatisfaction with a pre-existing replacement, I am here for you. I believe in providing personalized, comprehensive, and longitudinal total joint care of the highest quality for all of Northern Michigan.

Stay strong! 💪💪💪Mike's been an athlete all his life. He's also an avid weight lifter and body builder. Knee arthritis started to get in his way and limit what he wants to do.

I performed a muscle-sparing/subvastus approach total knee replacement on him with a 'personalized'/kinematic knee alignment to help re-create his pre-arthritic alignment and stability. The hope is that by restoring this and by using a knee implant designed to help drive your knee to move more normally, it can result in a knee replacement that works more closely to how a 'normal' knee is supposed to work and move.

Mike recovered beautifully and amazed his physical therapists (and me). Very limited pain, much easier physical therapy course in terms of regaining his range of motion and quadriceps strength. He's doing phenomenal, and I'm very proud of his progress.

Life is short. Don't let advanced hip or knee arthritis limit you from how you want to live.

How long will my hip replacement last? This well-done study out of The Lancet (a prominent medical journal) extrapolated registry data showing a predicted 30-year survivorship of ~92%, meaning a 90+% chance of the replacement still being in and working well at 30 years! So, how long will a successful hip replacement done tomorrow last? Who knows! However, the answer is likely a very long time. This is partly why younger age is no longer a barrier to getting out of hip pain due to degenerative changes.

The estimated 92% 30-year survivorship of contemporary total hip replacement suggests that advances in bearing surface technology have greatly improved the long-term durability of total hip replacements and might influence patient counselling, health-care planning, and device regulation.

Now this was a DOOZY of a revision! Jeff had hip replacements done more than 20 years ago. His right hip replacement unfortunately failed dramatically due to component wear. He had massive acetabular and femoral bone loss that required a major reconstructive surgery. He is now about 4 months out and is doing great! I'm very proud of his progress.

If you are having problems with an existing hip or knee replacement, you do NOT have to travel for your care!

If you have the time, please go to the link here to send a (pre-populated) letter to our Michigan congressmen to tell them that the proposed 20% pay decrease for hip and knee replacement surgery by Medicare is a very damaging idea and will significantly impact access to hip and knee care. Please share with others.

Very unfortunate new proposed payment cuts coming from Medicare, the single largest ever proposed in a year. This has the potential to significantly impact patient care as well as access to hip and knee care. The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons - AAHKS is going to work hard alongside other professional groups to help mitigate these very damaging policy recommendations. I will post when there are things that patients can do to help speak up. No other career gets paid differently for their work depending on what insurance people have. This unfortunately is a dangerous path Medicare has been heading down for some time, and it is getting worse. People also have to keep in mind that for many surgeons in their practice, 50% or more of their professional fee has to go to pay their overhead/staff/bills. Taxes take a large chunk out as well, leaving not much meat on the bone when total joint surgeons are doing better work than ever before and more total joint replacements than ever before.

$980... That's what Medicare will pay a surgeon to replace a human hip in 2027. A set of four car tires costs about the same. This week AAHKS held an emergency meeting of the Presidential Line. CMS just proposed the largest single-year cut to hip and knee reimbursement in history. 20%. Let that sink...

AUGMENTED REALITY with your knee replacement! WHAT IS IT?

It is a technology-enabled total knee replacement with extreme accuracy that helps me achieve a more personalized knee alignment tailored to your natural anatomy. Not a 'one-size fits all' knee replacement philosophy! The Pixee platform allows me to more accurately position your implants and plan my boney resections in the alignment your leg and knee are intended to be in. This helps me better balance your knee replacement which also makes recovery easier, less painful, and hopefully a happier, more natural-feeling knee replacement. I have been very pleased with the Pixee platform. Efficient, less invasive, cost-effective, and it allows me to also use the knee replacement components/parts that I feel are best for my patients.

Let me know if you have any questions!
