While driving across the country this week, me and my traveling companions stopped at Hot Springs National Park. It was fun to sip hot springs water and hike in the area, but also to read about massage and spa treatments of the past. The hot springs have long been recognized as a place to go to soothe aches and pains but developed as a place for wellness retreat once colonized. The massage industry’s struggles with accessibility in this era involved segregation, pricey fees and exclusion of those with contagious ailments.
