Advocacy isn't complete if we only fight for the most "acceptable" among us.
It is easy for social media algorithms to elevate clean, highly aesthetic, and "palatable" presentations of disability and neurodivergence. But when our advocacy centers only on those who can mask well, work traditional jobs, or communicate in ways that make the dominant culture comfortable, we are leaving a huge portion of our community behind.
Lateral ableism happens when we distance ourselves from high support needs, intellectual disabilities, or "messy" symptoms to protect our own standing in an ableist world.
True collective liberation requires us to actively break down these internal hierarchies. We have to build solidarity that centers those with the highest support needs, not just those who look good on a grid.
How can we make our local and digital spaces more genuinely inclusive of all support needs?
