Decoding ABA: An Essential Guide

Term: Chaining (Forward, Backward, Total Task)

Explanation: Many life skills are routines made of smaller actions, from tying shoes to preparing for the day. Chaining helps teach those actions in a planned order. Forward chaining starts with the first step, backward chaining begins with the final step, and total task practices the complete routine with support only where needed. We choose the path that encourages confidence and keeps progress going.

ABA Myth vs. Reality : ABA relies on punishment or harsh methods.

Myth: ABA is punishment-based.

Reality: Modern ABA is centered on positive reinforcement, meaningful skill-building, and individualized support.
Therapy plans are developed with families, guided by informed consent, and built around each child’s well-being.
The goal is to help children build meaningful skills in supportive, compassionate ways.
