THIS IS EVERYTHING.

I was invited to speak to the graduating nursing class at Rowan College of South Jersey this morning.

I presented “Mindful at the Bedside” — 90 minutes of insights and practices for finding more ease and clarity at the bedside and beyond.

It’s an introduction to mindfulness, and yet so much more.

We discuss mindfulness. The nervous system. We discuss how ease and calm are not boring, but instead are the platforms that make it possible to bring the best of ourselves to a situation. How calm helps us show how differently for ourselves, our colleagues and our patients. We talked about stress. What it is. How it shows up in the body. We talked about how even low grade stress can, over a long enough timeline, lead to burnout. THAT. We had THAT conversation — naming burnout, and talking about how prevalent it is.

And even amidst all this content there were three different mindfulness practice sessions. And there was laughter. So much laughter.

Nothing helps learning so much as laughter.

This is what I needed in nursing school.

I am honored to be in the position I am — to name some and the best and most difficult parts of bedside care, as well as provide tools to navigate both.

These are the mornings and opportunities that fill my heart. This is why I did the Meditation Teacher Training I did. So one day I could turn to my colleagues and offer meaningful help.

This quote has been visiting me over and over for the last few days, so I wanted to share it

So often we wait until we are anxious, stressed, overwhelm or completely run through before thinking about something we can do to take care of and tend to ourselves

It’s like we’re waiting for our house to catch fire before thinking about giving ourselves a glass of water

When we learn to practice meditation we learn how to recognize and live from a place of wholeness and love that is always already present

Rather than only tending to ourselves after everything has fallen apart — we begin to live a life where love leads

Does your story sound like this?

“So long as I meet everyone else’s expectations, and everyone else’s needs are met then — and ONLY then — is it OK for me to feel relaxed, at ease and content?”

If so, you’re not alone.

Many people grow up in situations where their sense of worth and ability are tied to other people’s expectations and conditions.

In turn we learn that love is conditional. And we love ourselves “if and only if” we are meeting certain expectations

Lovingkindness meditation helps us reclaim our innate ability to extend love and compassion to ourselves without condition. What it looks like is: even in hard moments, when we think we’ve fallen short, we can still extend love and compassion to ourselves.

Reclaiming this ability to extend unconditional love to ourselves can be life changing.

Love blooms us.

One of the greatest secrets is held within your own heart. It is your ability not only to recognize but to grow your ability to feel love for yourself, in relationship, and in connection with the wild & wondrous world.

Incredibly, there is a practice, a meditation, to recognize and begin to grow this lively and loving heart.

(also known as metta) meditation enables us to connect with our innate ability to tend to ourselves with greater love and compassion, and to connect more fully with others.

Two of the biggest barriers to bringing more positive and lasting change into the world are 1) not recognizing or knowing how to connect with our own potential and 2) understanding how to relate with (and counteract!) our Inner Critic

Attending, you’ll learn two key practices:
1) How mindfulness meditation helps us recognize the real source of our inmost skills and talents
2) How lovingkindness meditation helps us begin to release our identification with (or being bullied by) our Inner Critic

Home is not a place we find, but a space we create.

Mindfulness practices help us to recognize that in any place, at any time we can connect with a felt sense of ease, openness, connection, warmth and creativity. When we change ourselves, we change the world!

Join me for this evening workshop to explore TWO KEY WAY of how we can find ourselves at home the world:

1. Discovering peace and ease in the body.

For so many people, calm and peace are only words — disconnected from our lived experienced. We’ll explore mindfulness practices to relieve tension, and in doing so begin connect with a direct experience of ease and well-being.

2. Countering the Inner Critic.

One of the biggest obstacles to engaging more fully in our lives and the world comes from the aspect of ourselves that tells us I Can’t Do It, I Am Not Enough, Whatever I Do Won’t Make a Difference, — or some variation thereof. We are stopped before we ever begin! In this class we’ll explore a practice for recognizing and countering this Inner Critic, so we can cultivate the confidence and courage we need to bring our skills into the world.

Today I presented Mindful at the Bedside for Temple University Hospital’s Pathology Faculty

They were engaged, curious, and tuned in for the hour-long session while we talked about the new science of health and well-being and how promotes clarity of mind

We also discussed “pre-silience” — how practicing mindfulness helps you preserve your quality and clarity of thought and problem solving as you move through your day

I can’t wait to go back!

We are always in relationship.

Whether it is with ourselves, with those around us, or the wider world.

Mindfulness meditation affords us the invaluable opportunity to deepen our understanding of our body, our emotions and our thinking.

Just cultivating this relationship with yourself makes you a source of stability, strength, and compassion in other peoples lives.

But, and this is the kicker, to the extent you can be fully present for yourself, to that extent you can be more fully present for others.

You become an open, supportive, loving and safe person to be around, to talk to, to confide in. Understanding how beautiful but also how difficult and challenging it can be to stay present to life, we find it easier and easier to extend compassion and grace to others.
