Real Girl Method Erin Chambers is a certified Pilates and Barre Instructor in the Philadelphia and South Jersey area. Getting in shape shouldn’t be a punishment.

It’s an amazing and empowering lifestyle decision that anyone can make. I believe in finding the pleasurable side of fitness; and while there may be a sore muscle or two along the way, the benefits of fitness are worth the challenge. I have developed my training regime by working with a variety of people, and constantly adapting my program to the needs of my new clients.

Inside the Original Pilates Studio:
A demonstration with the Pilates Headdress

In 1953 Joseph Pilates used his camera to capture a rare moment inside his studio- his student, Anna Woolley Shaffer using the Headdress around the studio and on the reformer.

In an interview, Ms. Shaffer stated that she was waiting for her session to begin and decided to pick up the Headdress and play around with it. Joe thought it was really great and he said he wanted to film it. He then took out his 8mm camera and to film this beautiful documentation of the studio and the creative ways the Headdress could be used.

We can see her dancing, balancing, and most incredibly, using the Headdress while doing splits in two directions on the reformer.

During the interview she says that it was her idea to have Clara come in at the end of the film, which is a really nice touch.

He later sent her a copy of the film, which is what we are watching here today.

Did you know? The only reason why we call the apparatus the “Headdress” is because the name appeared in a caption under a photo in Life Magazine of Joe Pilates teaching with it at Jacob’s Pillow. We don’t actually know if that’s what Joe called it!

Today, on this day in 1979, Jane Fonda officially opened her aerobics studio, “Workout,” in Beverly Hills!

Many people came to the opening to work out and exercise with Jane herself! 💪

Gym? Not quite.
Lymphatic drainage massage? Maybe.

This incredible throwback clip from The History Source shows the 1940s, “slenderizing salons.”

These places capitalized on the unrealistic beauty standards of the time, pushing the idea that a slim figure could be achieved with machines that vibrated and rolled away “flaws” — all without breaking a sweat. 🤨

It was a reflection of the beauty standards of the time… and the pressure women felt to mold themselves to fit them.

Thankfully, we’ve come a long way.

Today, women are training for strength, confidence, energy, and longevity — not just aesthetics.

And while strength training is one of the most powerful things you can do for your health, it’s not the only way to move your body and feel good in it.
