Medicare policy changes happen every year, but most families only find out when something stops being covered. π
CMS issued its final rule for 2026 a while ago, but have you had a chance to check it out? Several updates directly affect seniors and families relying on Medicare Advantage and Part D plans for home care and prescription coverage. Here's what actually matters:
π Insulin stays capped at $35/month: if your loved one is diabetic and on Medicare Part D, insulin cost-sharing remains protected: no more than $35 per month regardless of the plan.
π All recommended adult vaccines are now free: Medicare Part D cannot charge cost-sharing or apply a deductible for any adult vaccine recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. Flu shots, shingles, pneumonia: covered in full.
π Spread prescription costs across the year: the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan now auto-renews for 2026. Instead of large out-of-pocket costs at the pharmacy, seniors can spread drug costs into monthly payments across the calendar year, a significant financial relief for those on multiple medications.
π₯ Stronger protections against coverage denials: Medicare Advantage plans are now more restricted in their ability to reverse a previously approved hospital admission. If a plan approved it, they have to honor it, closing a loophole that has cost many families unexpectedly.
π Better integration for dual-eligible patients: seniors enrolled in both Medicare and Medicaid will see more integrated care coordination by 2027, including single ID cards and unified health assessments, less paperwork, less confusion.
These changes are already in effect for 2026. If you're not sure how they apply to your loved one's current plan, it's worth a call to your provider or insurance carrier. π
