This Spina Bifida Awareness Month, we’re sharing Owen’s story!

After learning at her 20-week ultrasound that her unborn son had spina bifida, Owen’s mom, Cassandra, came to our hospital and learned about fetal surgery, an option she never knew existed. At 23 weeks, Owen underwent fetal surgery to repair his myelomeningocele, becoming our team's 500th baby to undergo fetal surgery for spina bifida. After nearly 37 weeks of pregnancy, he was born in our Garbose Family Special Delivery Unit.

October is Spina Bifida Awareness Month!

A prenatal spina bifida diagnosis can bring a lot of questions, uncertainty and emotions for families. But you don’t have to navigate that journey alone.

Throughout October, we’ll be sharing information, resources and stories from our spina bifida community including the experiences of children and families who have walked this path.

This week some members of our team traveled to Kyoto, Japan to represent our Center at the International Fetal Medicine and Surgery Society! A total of 12 platform presentations were given, including the evolution of care in spina bifida since the landmark MOMS trial, alongside updates for congenital diaphragmatic hernia, fetal lung lesions and more. September is Chiari Malformation Awareness Month.

Chiari malformation is a rare condition that affects the back part of the head where the brain and spinal cord connect.

Some Chiari malformations can be identified before birth through advanced prenatal imaging, giving families important information about their baby’s diagnosis and care before delivery. In our Center, early diagnosis allows our multidisciplinary team to begin planning care and supporting families as early as possible.
