So many of our clients carry a quiet shame about feeling any joy while the world is hurting. In her latest post, Kelly Mariani, LPC, makes the case that your joy isn't selfish. It's essential.

As Kelly puts it:
"Joy and suffering are not a zero-sum game. You experiencing joy doesn't create more suffering elsewhere, and resisting joy doesn't reduce suffering elsewhere."

Grief doesn’t ask for permission, and it doesn’t follow a timeline. You’re allowed to feel it without letting it consume you.

Give it a window, not a door. You don’t have to let grief run the whole day to honor it. Let it come in waves instead of trying to hold it all at once.

Grief isn’t linear, and it isn’t meant to be processed in one sitting. You’re allowed to feel it fully for a moment and then surface for air. Find one small thing each day that reminds you you’re still here, a cup of coffee, sunlight through a window, a song you love.

You’re not betraying your grief by noticing beauty. Talk about what you lost, not just that you lost it. Grief shrinks a little when it becomes specific. Let other people be in it with you when you can.

Grief is one of the loneliest experiences there is and one of the most universal, and you don’t have to carry it alone. Be gentle with the days that feel okay. A good day isn’t a sign that you’ve moved on or that you didn’t care enough. It’s just a good day, and you’re allowed to have them without guilt.

Human rights violations, family separation, and immigration detention aren't abstract. They affect real people, real families, and real nervous systems, including many in our communities.

If you're feeling anxious, numb, on edge, angry, or overwhelmed, you're not alone. Many of us are holding a lot at once, and it bleeds into daily life.
Mental health doesn't live outside of what's happening around us. These moments show up in sleep, focus, mood, and the way our bodies carry stress. Ours included.

If this is weighing on you, go gently. Take the breaks you can. Step away when you need to. Come back to what steadies you. Lean on connection where it's available.

Care looks different depending on capacity. For some, that's resting. For others, it's checking on a friend, sharing resources, or supporting trusted organizations. There's no single right way to respond.

No ambiguity: we stand with immigrants and against detention and family separation. We won't normalize cruelty.

Ever have seasons where you’re doing all the things - showing up to work, taking care of everyone, staying “on top of it” - but internally you feel… muted?

Not sad exactly. Not falling apart. Just kind of numb. Like you’re moving through your day on autopilot.

That can be a sign of something many people don’t have language for: a functional freeze state.

It’s not laziness. It’s not a character flaw. And it isn’t always “burnout” or “depression,” either. It’s often your nervous system doing what it’s designed to do when stress has been running too long with no real relief: protect you by shutting down what feels too much.

A few signs that can show up:
▪️ You’re productive, but disconnected
▪️ Brain fog / decision fatigue
▪️ Low emotional range (even good things don’t really land)
▪️ Chronic tension, fatigue, shallow breathing
▪️ “Avoidance” disguised as staying busy

And here’s the part people rarely hear: trying harder usually makes it worse.

What helps is small, safe, body-based support that tells your system, “You’re not in danger anymore.”
