New research highlighted by U.S. News & World Report is challenging assumptions about how quickly patients with sleep apnea adapt to CPAP therapy.

The study, presented at the American Thoracic Society Annual Meeting, found that many patients who did not initially meet Medicare’s 90-day adherence requirements continued using their CPAP devices long term and experienced meaningful benefits. The findings raise important questions about whether current coverage policies may prematurely limit access to a treatment that can significantly improve health and quality of life.

The research reflects a growing focus on patient-centered approaches to sleep health, an area in which Penn Nursing faculty, including sleep scientist and Professor Amy M. Sawyer, PhD, RN, FAAN, chair of the Department of Biobehavioral Health Sciences, have long contributed important scholarship and leadership.

As healthcare systems seek to improve outcomes while reducing barriers to care, studies like this underscore the importance of aligning policy with how patients actually experience and adapt to treatment.

How can improving men's health help improve health for everyone?

Penn Nursing's Derek M. Griffith, PhD, P*K Professor and a leading scholar in men's health equity, recently co-convened the Men's Health and Health for All Track at the MenCare Global Changemaker Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with colleagues from Equimundo and Global Action on Men's Health.

Bringing together policymakers, business and organizational leaders, advocates, researchers, and individuals with diverse lived experiences, the group developed a roadmap to better integrate men's health into broader population health strategies.

Over the next 15 months, participants will work to:
✔️ Demonstrate that men's health and the health of women and girls are interconnected—not competing priorities
✔️ Provide policymakers with practical tools to advance men's health initiatives
✔️ Equip healthcare professionals to better identify and address men's health needs
✔️ Develop a public-facing campaign that reminds every man: You are seen. You matter. Your health matters.

This work reflects a longstanding commitment of Dr. Griffith (pictured second from right) to advancing health equity and creating solutions that improve health outcomes for individuals, families, and communities around the world.

Penn Nursing leaders and LDI Senior Fellows George Demiris, PhD, Dean Antonia M. Villarruel, PhD, RN, FAAN, and Connie Ulrich, PhD, RN, are helping shape the national conversation around artificial intelligence and the future of patient care.

In a new Q&A published by the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics, the Penn Nursing faculty discuss the opportunities and risks of integrating AI into nursing practice — from improving clinical workflows and patient monitoring to addressing concerns around bias, patient trust, workforce pressures, ethics, and accountability.

The discussion builds on Penn Nursing’s recent *Nursing Outlook* paper examining how AI can support healthcare without compromising the human-centered foundations of nursing care. Together, the faculty emphasize that nurses must play a central role in designing, evaluating, and guiding AI systems in healthcare.

In 2006, the Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing received the papers of Mary Starke Harper—a pioneering geriatric mental health nurse and national leader. Her collection preserves the legacy of a trailblazer who helped transform care for older adults. She is pictured below with President Bill Clinton.

Through archives, exhibitions, fellowships, and scholarships, the Bates Center continues to preserve nursing history and share its impact with new generations. As part of Bates at 40: Milestones in Nursing History, we’re celebrating the moments that have shaped the Center’s legacy over four decades.
