Grief doesn't erase the bond. It changes the form of it.

It evolves with you. It’s dynamic.

The way you understand the person continues to change while you go about living and growing.

In grief work, we call this concept Continuing Bonds — the idea that our relationship with someone we've lost doesn't end at death. It evolves. Rather than "letting go," we find new ways to stay connected: through memory, ritual, meaning, and love that comes from within.

Every so often, I stumble across a quickly jotted note from an old session or support group with things that really struck me. This was one of those.

It is more than a few years old at this point, and I can only guess at what we had been talking about. Living with cancer, maybe? The idea of hope? Being future focused versus present focused? Finding ways to continue forward with an invisible illness? Living in the aftermath of loss?

I could try to attach this to a post about some concept that I want to share. But the reality is that, whatever context these words came in, they are profound enough to stand on their own. A statement of someone's will, strength, and choice for living.

I'm grateful every day that I get to do this work.

Sometimes, we just need to get through a tough moment. Or find a way to take the intensity down just enough to figure out what's next.

The way we talk to ourselves matters. It sets expectations and frames our reactions. More than that, it offers us compassion straight from the source.

Here are 8+ things you can say to yourself the next time you are stressed, overwhelmed, or anxious to help you through the moment. Please take them, I have plenty to share. 🤍

I’ve always loved Earth Day. 🌍

Long before I started this work, I knew that when I die I want to be put into the ground with nothing between me and the soil I’m meant to return to. What I didn’t always know was that my fantasy was a real possibility. So in honor of this Earth Day, let’s talk about the choices we still have - even in death - to be stewards of the planet and remember that we don’t just live on this Earth, we belong to it.

As a grief therapist and end-of-life doula, I sit with people who want to find, make, and share meaning in their choices. People want their death to reflect the values of their life. For some, that means choosing a gentler return to the Earth. One that honors the body as part of nature, not separate from it. A final act of care that aligns with how they moved through the world.

There is no “right way”. Only the one that feels meaningful, intentional, and true to you and your people. If you’ve ever been curious about green or natural burials, or want space to explore your own choices without pressure or urgency, I’m here for those conversations too. 🌿

Grief is harder when we aren’t allowed to talk about death. That message can be explicit - “We don’t talk about that out loud.” or implicit through mirroring others.

Many people carry doubt after a loss—not because they didn’t love deeply, but because they didn’t know how to have the conversation.

Talking about death won’t cause it, but it *can* help people face it together. It can create space for love, meaning, preparation, connection, and meaningful decisions.

Who taught you how to talk about death?

Grief can feel different from moment to moment, and the body responds. Grief can emerge as feeling heavy, chaotic, rushed, or stuck - just to name a few. These feelings can take us by surprise, or make us question if we'll ever "move forward". What's more, grieving bodies take a physical hit - that deep stress can lead to increased pain, inflammation, and risk of illness.

Bringing a background in dance/movement therapy to grief work combines psychotherapy with movement expression to help find meaning, speak beyond words, regulate our bodies, and ride the waves of grief in an unlikely dance. We gently move into a new daily rhythm.

Whether you’re navigating sudden loss, gradual decline, or the complex feelings that caregivers carry, A Quiet Space Counseling offers compassionate therapy for the whole person.
