For patients with early stage bladder cancer, the standard of care treatment is Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) treatment, a solution of cells injected directly into the bladder. The treatment is a form of immunotherapy that helps your immune system attack the cancer cells in your bladder.

The Urology Department at Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia, led by Dr. Ed Trabulsi, recently opened two clinical trials of BCG treatment for patients with bladder cancer. One trial is for patients who did not respond to the first round of BCG treatment: it adds a new drug to see if that combination helps patients respond better. The second trial assesses a genetically modified strain of BCG – this form of BCG treatment is approved for us in other counties and is awaiting FDA approval in the US.

These clinical trials represent an important step forward at Jefferson Einstein and the SKCCC, offering patients access to innovative therapies while helping advance the science that will shape the future of bladder cancer care.

We are are proud to recognize the team in our Clinical Trials Office who bring the latest research discoveries to patients through clinical trials this National Cancer Research Month!

Meet Misty Leech, a Clinical Research Nurse Senior on the Early Phase Research Operations team.

🔬 What if your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of this job is being able to create special relationships with each of my patients even if only for a short time while on these clinical trials. I make sure that each and every one of my patients, including their families, knows that I am here for them to help with anything they need during this difficult time.

🔬 What does cancer research mean to you?

Simply put, It means finding a cure. I have personally experienced close family members who have been diagnosed with cancer and knowing that there could be a cure one day is promising and reassuring.

🔬 What motivates you on the tough days?

My team! They are the best EVER! I was at my previous job for 25 years and never had coworkers that are so helpful, working together toward one goal to prioritize these patients. They are dependable, supportive, dedicated, and hardworking. Knowing this gets me through every hard day on the job.

🔬 If you could describe your job in 3 words, what would they be?

Rewarding, Impactful, Compassionate

May is Melanoma & Skin Cancer Awareness Month and we are highlighting the lab of Dr. Andrew Aplin, Kalbach-Newton Professor in Cancer Research and Deputy Director of the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The team includes experts in cell biology, molecular biology, immunology, and bioinformatics, in addition to students and postdoctoral fellows, as Dr. Aplin is committed to mentoring trainees.

Research in the Aplin laboratory focuses on melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

Although less common than basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer because it can quickly spread if not detected and treated early.

Despite recent advances in treating melanoma and improved survival rates, the cancer doesn’t always respond to treatment or it may develop resistance. The Aplin lab aims to understand how melanomas adapt and develop resistance to treatment and their work has translated to clinical trials investigating better ways to target melanoma in patients.

In addition to melanoma of the skin, the Aplin lab also studies uveal, or ocular, melanoma, which is a rare type of cancer that begins in the eye.

In May, we join the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) in recognizing National Cancer Research Month.

Clinical trials deliver lifesaving cancer therapies to patients. At the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Clinical Trials Office (CTO) is behind the scenes to seamlessly bring trials to patients.

Meet Holly Figueroa, who is a Sponsored/IIT Regulatory Start-Up Lead on the CTO's Research Support Services team. Holly helps ensure everything is compliant, thorough, and ready to move forward efficiently by providing training, guidance, and ongoing support to our regulatory coordinators throughout the study start-up process.

🔬 What is your favorite part of your job?

Without a doubt, the most rewarding part of my job is knowing that something I helped support can reach patients. Seeing an investigational product move forward and eventually be approved is an incredible feeling. It is a reminder that even behind the scenes, our work matters and contributes to improving lives.

Equally rewarding is watching our Regulatory Coordinators grow. Seeing their confidence build, their knowledge expand, and their skills sharpen over time is so fulfilling. Being able to support their development is something I genuinely enjoy.

🔬 What does cancer research mean to you?

Cancer research has become deeply personal for me. I recently lost my father to a rare form of blood cancer, and that experience changed my perspective in a profound way.

To me, cancer research represents time—more time for families, more memories, more moments that might not otherwise be possible. It’s the hope that others will get the chance that my family didn’t have, and that drives home just how meaningful this work truly is.

🔬 What motivates you on tough days?

On tougher days, I try to stay grounded by celebrating the small wins, whether it’s a submission completed, a question resolved, or a teammate gaining clarity. Those little victories add up.

At the same time, I keep my focus on the bigger picture, which is the impact of what we’re working toward. Remembering the “why” behind the work helps me push through challenges and stay motivated.

🔬 If you could describe your job in three words, what would they be?

Chaos, Caffeine, Compliance. Somehow it all just works.

Chaos reflects the fast-paced and ever-changing nature of study start-up. No two days look the same. Caffeine: The not-so-secret fuel that keeps me going! Compliance: the heart of it all and keeps us all on track. Put together, it’s a little hectic, a lot of responsibility, and incredibly meaningful. Honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Friday before Memorial Day is recognized as Don’t Fry Day, an important reminder to protect your skin from harmful UV rays and help reduce your risk of developing skin cancer as we head into summer.

Even though the forecast this weekend is calling for a rainy one across the tri-state area, don’t forget these important steps to help you practice sun safety this summer and all year long:

☀️ Wear sunscreen - choose a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVA & UVB radiation, even on cloudy days, and don’t forget to reapply every two hours when spending time outside or after swimming/sweating

☀️ Wear sunglasses and protective clothing when spending time outdoors 🕶️

☀️ Seek shade, especially midday when the sun is strongest ⛱️
