Being told to “just rest” after a concussion is common. Turns out, exercise might be exactly what you need!

Rest alone is not what is needed for concussion recovery. In Persistent Post Concussion Symptoms, the brain has often healed from a metabolic standpoint but the nervous system may still be dysregulated. While resting entirely may help you prevent your symptoms from coming on, it does not retrain the system to tolerate activity again. Overtime, avoidance may actually reinforce symptoms rather than resolve them.

But why is exercise needed? Your brain needs blood flow and stimulation to heal properly and exercise when prescribed appropriately is one of the best ways to improve both. The key is a gradual graded return to exercise that supports recovery without increasing your symptoms.

We use the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test (BCTT) to identify your individual exercise threshold, the point in which your nervous system struggles to regulate. Exercise is then prescribed below that threshold and progressed gradually, with repeat testing to guide recovery.

This approach improves autonomic regulation and increases your tolerance to exercise for recovery. If your symptoms are lingering beyond the expected recovery window, a symptom-threshold assessment may be worth exploring!

I had the chance to spend time with a local dystonia support group, and I’m still thinking about their strength and honest insight. They shared openly because they felt understood and trusted that their experiences would be met with care. Many spoke about how they often feel misunderstood and how isolating that can be.

These slides reflect what they live with day to day, and what they wish more people knew. There is so much resilience here💚

Whether you live with dystonia or support someone who does—what do you wish more people knew?

In FND, the brain spends too much time in its default mode network. The default mode network is active when we are internally focused, like when we are thinking about ourselves, the sensations we are experiencing, or how our body feels at any given moment.

The default mode network is overactive in FND, making movement feel effortful or painful. With this patient, she was limited in standing activities due to pain in her right leg.

This is where salience matters. The brain has another system that decides what deserves attention. When something is meaningful for the patient, the salience network helps shift the brain out of that internal mode and into action.

That’s why we’re mimicking archery here. 🏹 It’s a hobby this patient enjoys, so it carries real meaning. That meaning increases salience, helps the brain focus outward, and allows standing & weight-bearing to happen more automatically. Repeated and meaningful movement helps the brain relearn that movement is safe again.

💡This is key:
Archery would not be the right exercise for someone who doesn’t care about archery. FND treatment is always individualized to the patient’s interests to turn on the salience network.

Recovery isn’t about forcing movement. It’s about helping the brain return to automatic movement and having fun ❤️

Imagine your brain as a computer, constantly processing and sending signals to control your daily movements and functions.

With FND, it’s like your brain is experiencing a ‘software glitch’ & the signals get disrupted or misdirected, leading to altered communication of your brain networks.

The brain’s physical structure is like the computer’s hardware: it’s physically intact. However, the communication system (the software) is where things are getting disrupted…just like a computer program running slow or freezing up.

For people with FND, this miscommunication causes real symptoms.

The good news? The brain has a remarkable ability to ‘rewire’ itself through neuroplasticity. This means the brain can form new connections and pathways, essentially updating its software to improve the sending and receiving of daily signals. It’s like reinstalling a program or updating your system. 👏🧠🦾

At NeuPath, we focus on harnessing the power of neuroplasticity to help promote new connections for the brain to send and receive signals. This is done through targeted exercises, autonomic regulation, sensory processing, and movement strategies.

The brain is adaptable, and with the right guidance, you can reprogram the software!

🧠 Understanding Dystonia
Dystonia is a movement disorder that can cause involuntary muscle contractions resulting in abnormal postures. It can present in many different ways, and symptoms are unique from person to person. Regardless of presentation, the impact dystonia can have on daily life can be significant.

Because of this variability, individualized treatment is key. Physical therapy plays a valuable role in helping you improve movement control and support the brain’s ability to rewire through neuroplasticity.

Physical therapy helps by:
✅ Educating and understanding symptoms
✅ Retraining sensory–motor connections
✅ Regulating the nervous system
✅ Promoting neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to rewire and restore movement
