Day 3: managing neck pain.

To review, symptoms began after some circuit training over the weekend, pain and stiffness gradually worsened that day through my neck and across my shoulder blades (left side more than right). Pain and stiffness became severe with sleeping that night and getting out of bed the next morning.

With no symptoms indicating any severe injury and no symptoms down my arms, I began exercising my neck by moving it in the least painful directions. Pain and stiffness reduced with this approach.

Now, I’m noticing significant decrease in pain and stiffness. This is turning into just a mild issue and seems to be resolving quickly. Over the next couple days, I’ll progress by moving my neck in the directions I’ve been avoiding, as tolerated.

Along with the neck exercises, I’ve continued to prioritize general healthy habits: general activity, exercising (modified as needed), staying hydrated, maintaining a good diet, and prioritizing my sleep.

While movement has been painful, I continue to do so as long as my symptoms don’t worsen. I only limit or modify activities that make the pain progressively worse. Otherwise, I continue to stay as active as my symptoms allow.

Quick start to managing my own neck pain as a physical therapist.

The pain started over the weekend, after a nice workout and some heavy lifting at the gym. The neck and mid-back became more stiff and painful the following night.

Here’s my initial approach to some self care.

Exercise=Activity but Activity≠Exercise. We need both.

Activity supports general health.
Exercise supports activity.

An individualized exercise program is needed to support general health over the long-term.

Exercise=Activity but Activity≠Exercise. We need both.

General activity is necessary to support overall health. Exercise is necessary to support activity.

If the routine isn’t challenging, the body has no reason to adapt.

Resistance training isn’t just safe for knee osteoarthritis—it’s effective.

Consistent strength work can significantly reduce pain and improve quality of life, with most studies showing positive outcomes. 💪

Every program needs to be individualized to each person's specific strengths and weaknesses.

No well-designed program is "one-size-fits-all."

I'm guilty of mistake # 10, and I feel personally attacked right now.

Almost 10 years after American Council on Exercise - ACE published this graphic and people continue to make these same mistakes.

Rarely are we guilty of any lack of effort.

Most of these mistakes can be attributed to lack of planning and direction. Other pitfalls include lack of education and unwillingness to reach out for connection and support when needed.

Pursuit PT covers all of these barriers, providing the education, guidance, planning, support, and encouragement needed to reach whatever goals you set.

We may need to call in some additional support to help with # 10. I'm a physical therapist, not a nutritionist, and not a hypocrite.

Strength training doesn’t have an age limit.

For older adults, it’s one of the most effective ways to maintain independence, improve balance, and stay active in everyday life.

It’s not about lifting heavy — it’s about staying capable.

Strength training for kids isn’t dangerous — misinformation is.

When done properly, it helps build strength, confidence, coordination, and long-term health.

The goal isn’t heavy weights — it’s learning how to move well and build capacity over time.

Don’t let outdated myths hold the next generation back. Great information from BJSM.

5 tips for developing a quality strength training routine from the American College of Sports Medicine.

released their updated position stance on resistance training for muscle function, hypertrophy, and physical performance.

These are high quality recommendations for any well-designed exercise program.

I wanted to highlight 1 or 2 points to emphasize in this post, but each piece of information is vital to an effective, long-term training plan.

Save it. Reference it. Put it to practice.

Use it to guide your pursuit.
