Managing an in-flight medical emergency requires the best technology and equipment, training, and escalated assistance supported by experts. With over 40,000 medical events occurring in flight each year, the aviation industry must ensure that its crew members are equipped to handle any emergency because it is not likely that a medical professional will be onboard.

The aviation industry must continue to invest in technology that can help diagnose and treat medical emergencies in flight quickly. This can include streamlined communication that allows crew members to consult with medical professionals on the ground and enhanced medical equipment such as defibrillators, epinephrine, auto-injectors, and other life-saving equipment.

It is also essential for the industry to have a clear protocol in place for handling medical emergencies. This protocol should include steps for identifying and responding to medical emergencies and procedures for diverting the flight if necessary. In a medical emergency, crew members should also be trained to use the medical equipment onboard.

Successfully managing in-flight medical emergencies requires the best technology, equipment, training, and clear protocols for crew members. By investing in these resources, airlines can ensure that their crew members are prepared to handle any medical emergency that may arise during a flight and save lives.

Check out this exciting article from Charles Alcock for FutureFlight discussing the challenges posed by in-flight medical emergencies while onboard eVTOL aircraft. MedAire plans to deliver MedLink Assistance in new ways, taking advantage of advances in technology, to ensure passenger health and safety on the shorter flights these aircraft will take.
“The wrong type of medical event could cause a safety concern for the flight,” Bill Dolny MedAire CEO said, painting a mental picture of a passenger panicking in a small cabin. “There is not going to be a crew member in the back, and in some cases, there might not be a crew member at all.”

Inflight medical care specialists like MedAire are trying to determine how best to respond to emergency situations in new types of aircraft, including eVTOL air taxis.
