Why are peptides not FDA approved? (And why it doesn't matter)
I get asked this all the time. People get antsy about taking peptides or think they're not safe because they're not FDA-approved.
That's not the case at all.
What happened in 2013:
The Supreme Court ruled you cannot patent a natural compound.
For something to be FDA-approved:
It has to go through clinical trials supported by big pharma, then taken before the FDA for approval or registration.
The problem with peptides:
Because peptides are natural compounds, they're really hard to patent.
Therefore: Big pharma is not going to try to put them under their umbrella. No profit incentive without a patent.
Why this doesn't really matter:
A lot of things you take for your health are NOT FDA-approved:
→ Vitamin D
→ Creatine
→ Fish oil
→ Magnesium
→ Probiotics
We have LOTS of clinical studies on all of these modalities demonstrating they're good for you, good for your health, and safe.
FDA approval ≠ Safe
Lack of FDA approval ≠ Unsafe
FDA approval = Patentable and profitable for pharma
Peptides are natural, well-studied, and safe - just not profitable enough for big pharma to pursue approval.
