The scope of work can't only live on paper.

I recorded this walking a building on a Sunday deep clean. Sometimes you won't have the paper on you. With the right systems, you'll have the paper and the notifications. But you still need to be able to run the whole scope in your head, so you know what you're supposed to be doing in every room.

That's what makes the clean consistent every time, not just on the good days.

Owners: how do you get a new crew member to know a site's scope without the paper?

Last night we built something. πŸ”¦
Youth 14–22 and their parents came out to First Light, our Tech Lab Showcase. We took one idea and built it live in the room.
This is just the start.

427 window panes. One walk-through. Bid won. πŸͺŸ

Before I put a number on a job, I walk every wall myself. Every pane, every ledge, every step. A bid built on a guess loses money. Got the call this morning: it's ours.

Do the homework first, then price it. That's how I grind on the big jobs and the small ones.

Owners, how do you count a job before you bid? πŸ‘‡

Nobody emails the office to say the grout looks good.

That's this job. Counters, the base of the toilet, shower walls, the last row of seats. Done right, nobody notices. Miss one spot, and that's the spot everybody remembers.

So the standard can't be "looks clean." It has to be "nothing missed."

Facility managers: what's the spot in your building that always gets noticed when it's missed?

10/22/2026

It's not gonna be me doing the job.

That's how I set up every account. Somebody else is gonna be in that building, so the system has to run it, not me.

Trash first? Vacuum first? Pick one and do it the same way every time, so a new person can learn it on day one.

Train it. Duplicate it. Replicate it.

Owners, if you had to hand off your job tomorrow, what's the first thing you'd write down?

I did a walkthrough this morning at a plant I used to work at.

The last time I was on that floor I was incarcerated. That was 10 years ago. I ran the mixing machine, making the chemicals for the whole plant.

Today I walked in as the owner of the cleaning company bidding the job.

Same floors. Same bathrooms. Same break room. I was looking at it different this time. I was checking grout lines and corners and thinking about how my crew would get it right.

Walking back in felt surreal. I knew back then I wasn't going to let them break me.

I don't know yet if we get the job. I'm still grateful I got to walk in there like that.

Thank you to everybody who stuck with me.

A room can look clean from the doorway and still fail a walkthrough.

Early on, I judged a job by how fast we got through it. Now the part I care about is the double check: one more walk through the space before we leave, looking where the people who work there actually look.

Breakrooms, I check low. High-touch rooms, I check where hands land. The front desk, I check like a visitor walking in.

The clean is the work. The double check is the job.

Facility managers: when you walk in the morning after a clean, where do you look first?

10/20/2026

I used to clean buildings against the clock.

When I first started in cleaning, I'd time myself on every job and try to shave minutes off. Faster felt like better.

Seven years in, the question changed. Sundays on one of our contracts are the deep clean, office by office. What I care about now is the system: what keeps us from missing things, and what keeps us from missing areas. Then we walk it again.

Speed you can get later. Missed spots cost you the account.

Facility managers: what's the one thing a cleaning crew misses most in your building?
