Autistic teens and young adults may not automatically recognize these unwritten expectations.

One of the most empowering skills a teen can learn is self-advocacy.

Examples include:

“I need extra time.”

“Can you explain that another way?”

“I’m feeling overwhelmed.”

“I need a break.”

Advocating for yourself builds confidence at school, work, and in the community.

Self-advocacy isn’t about asking for special treatment, it’s about communicating your needs effectively.

Today’s teens spend a lot of time online and social safety is just as important there.

Teach your teen that it’s okay to:

✔️ Keep personal information private
✔️ Say no to sharing photos
✔️ Ignore messages from strangers
✔️ Ask a trusted adult when something feels uncomfortable
✔️ Block or report inappropriate behavior

Understanding healthy online relationships is part of becoming an independent adult.

Occupational therapists often help families practice these conversations in a safe, supportive way.

When people hear “social skills,” they often think about making friends.

But social skills are also about everyday independence.

Social skills help teens and young adults:
⭐ Ask for help
⭐ Order food at a restaurant
⭐ Talk with coworkers
⭐ Participate in family gatherings
⭐ Join community activities
⭐ Handle disagreements respectfully
⭐ Advocate for themselves

Strong social skills help open doors at school, work, and in the community.

People with autism CAN learn to understand social relationships.

One of the most important life skills we can teach teens and young adults is that not every relationship looks the same.

✔️ Family
✔️ Friends
✔️ Teachers
✔️ Coworkers
✔️ Neighbors
✔️ Acquaintances
✔️ Online contacts

Each relationship comes with different expectations, boundaries, and ways of communicating.

When teens understand these differences, they’re better prepared to:
• Build friendships
• Stay safe
• Become more independent
• Feel more confident in everyday interactions

These skills don’t always develop naturally but they can be taught through practice, patience, and real-life experiences.
