Earlier this year, I looked for a therapist who had — at the very least — a curious stance about what it might feel like to come from the background that I come from. I was met with a defensive stance, citing discomfort surrounding being transparent about working with the groups I identify with.
As a trauma-based couple therapist who works with a variety of cultural presentations, I cannot emphasize enough how impactful it is to purposefully integrate (or exclude) cultural humility in the space of therapy.
When it’s included, it makes the world of a difference in safety; when it’s excluded, it can be misattuned at best and retraumatizing at worst.
Folks who engage in therapy deserve a space in which their provider does the work of educating themselves without burdening the client to be the educator. Cultural competency matters.
