💙 **What Is Treatment-Resistant Depression?**
**What happens when antidepressants don’t work?**
For some people living with depression, finding an effective treatment isn’t as simple as trying one antidepressant.
**Treatment-resistant depression (TRD)** generally refers to depression that hasn’t improved enough after trying **at least two appropriate antidepressant treatments** for an adequate amount of time.
That can feel discouraging—but it does **not** mean there are no options left.
When standard antidepressants aren’t providing enough relief, a healthcare professional may consider:
🔹 Adjusting the dose or switching medications
🔹 Combining medications
🔹 Adding psychotherapy or changing therapy approaches
🔹 Reviewing sleep, medical conditions, medications, or other factors that may affect symptoms
🔹 Considering treatments such as **TMS, ECT, or ketamine/esketamine** for appropriate patients
Depression treatment is highly individual. Sometimes the challenge isn’t finding *a* treatment—it’s finding the **right combination of treatments for that person**.
If you’ve tried antidepressants and still feel like you’re struggling, talk with a qualified mental health professional about what other options may be appropriate.
