CHRONIC PAIN CAN STEAL YOUR JOY… IF YOU LET IT.
Lately, I’ve been learning this lesson in a very personal way.
Living with ongoing pain is exhausting. It doesn’t just affect your body—it can affect your patience, your energy, your sleep, your motivation, your relationships, and eventually, the way you experience life.
When everything hurts, it becomes very easy to stop doing the things that make you feel like YOU.
And that’s where I’ve had to remind myself of something I teach others all the time:
Self-care isn’t only for the days when it feels good.
Sometimes self-care is choosing a little temporary discomfort so that you can experience more comfort, mobility, strength, and freedom afterward.
Right now, exercise doesn’t always feel good to me.
Stretching doesn’t always feel good.
Moving doesn’t always feel good.
Some days, getting started is the hardest part.
But I know my body well enough to recognize the difference between hurting myself and experiencing the temporary discomfort of safely moving a body that hurts.
So I modify.
I slow down.
I listen.
I breathe.
I rest when my body asks me to rest.
And I keep showing up for myself.
Because almost every time I finish moving, stretching, breathing, meditating, or intentionally caring for my body, I’m grateful that I did.
Maybe I can’t control every sensation my body is experiencing right now.
But pain does not get to have everything.
It doesn’t get my joy.
It doesn’t get my strength.
It doesn’t get my connection to my body.
And it certainly doesn’t get to decide who I become.
Self-care isn’t always bubble baths, massages and things that immediately feel good.
Sometimes self-care says:
“This may be uncomfortable for a little while, but I love myself enough to do what supports the body I want to live in tomorrow.”
Keep moving—with wisdom.
Keep listening to your body.
Keep modifying when necessary.
Keep resting without guilt.
And most importantly…
Keep choosing yourself. ❤️
