A brain tumor diagnosis can feel overwhelming, bringing immediate uncertainty and fear. But behind the scenes, there is a powerful force fighting back. 🧠✨

This Brain Tumor Awareness Month, we are highlighting the steady, groundbreaking progress happening in our labs. Brain tumors like glioblastoma are notoriously difficult to treat, but TGen scientists are using advanced genomic tools to look at the unique molecular signature of each tumor.

By understanding exactly how these tumors grow and resist therapy, our teams are paving the way for highly personalized, targeted treatments

WE WON GOLD! 🥇🏆

We are thrilled to announce that our Nanobodies-Early Detection video just took home a Gold Telly Awards in the Non-Profit Campaign category!

This video shares how TGen and City of Hope are continuing to explore and expand our knowledge - no matter how small something may look to the naked eye - Nanobodies.

A massive shoutout to our crew, partners, and the amazing individuals who collaborated with us to tell this story. We couldn't be prouder of this team or this mission.

When a child is fighting a brain tumor, every data point matters. Currently, doctors use MRIs to see how treatment is working, but sometimes these images don't tell the whole story.

Drs. Shea Gallus and Floris Barthel are working to change that.

By studying brain tumor samples over time—from the first day of diagnosis all the way through treatment—they are searching to better understand how tumors evolve. They’re looking for a future where a liquid biopsy can tell us exactly what’s happening inside a tumor without relying solely on imaging.

This isn't just research; it’s a roadmap. It helps doctors know when to push harder or when it’s safe to scale back, ensuring every child gets the exact care they need.

Better diagnostics = Better decisions = Brighter futures. 💡

Meet the Mentor: Courtney Holden 🧬✨

As a Senior Molecular Technologist in the TGen Clinical Laboratory, Courtney is one of the experts behind the scenes, specializing in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS)—the high-tech process of decoding DNA to help solve complex medical mysteries.

Like many TGen peeps, she’s a lover of tea 🍵 Whether it’s hot, cold, or her favorite black tea, she’s always got a cup ready. She considers herself a "situational planner." No matter the trip, it has an outline of things to do, and lots of room to wing it and make an adventure. A Bucket List trip is to go to New Zealand to visit the Lord of the Rings sets, followed immediately by cage diving with Great White Sharks. 🦈

Courtney views mentoring as a two-way street—it challenges her to grow her own communication skills while she helps others. "We had two Helios Scholars who had never even held a pipette before, and by the end of 8 weeks, they were performing NGS all by themselves!"
We are so lucky to have Courtney’s expertise and passion in the TCL!

This Memorial Day, we honor the brave heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We also remember our duty to support and protect those who are still fighting—both on the battlefield and off. 🇺🇸

We are proud to share that SOTERIA Precision Medicine Foundation has partnered with the TGen, part of City of Hope, to bring advanced, leading-edge cancer care to our nation's elite Special Operations Forces (SOF). The project, led by Dr. Aleksandar Sekulic, physician-in-chief at TGen and director of translational research at City of Hope Cancer Center Phoenix, is a powerful collaboration, we are addressing critical gaps in military healthcare by providing SOF members and their families with:

🧬 Advanced Multi-Omic Diagnostics: Leading-edge testing to pinpoint precise, personalized treatment options.

📊 Data-Driven Insights: Genomic profiling to improve clinical outcomes and target specific cancers.

🛡️ Long-Term Protection: Research aimed at understanding, preventing, and treating cancers unique to our service members.

These heroes have given so much of their lives for our freedom. Now, through the power of precision medicine, we have the opportunity to give back.

May is Brain Tumor Awareness Month 🧠

In this month's episode of TGen Talks, meet two new TGen researchers whose shared love of science—and math—first brought them together in the lab and later in life. Drs. Simona Migliozzi and Luciano Garofano are married to each other and to their work.

They discuss their education in Italy, their research journeys across institutions in the U.S., and the path that ultimately led them to TGen, where Dr. Garofano’s expertise in math and statistics pairs seamlessly with Dr. Migliozzi's passion for improving outcomes for patients with glioblastoma. You’ll also hear about their individual contributions to the growing body of GBM research and learn which partner believes the other is the true “smart one” in the partnership.
