August was a busy month for research at TGen. Hear how scientists are exploring areas of Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and Parkinson's disease. As well as how to better understand heart transplant rejection by identifying the cell types present.

When a transplanted heart begins to show signs of rejection, doctors rely on tissue biopsies to assess what is happening. But a new study suggests that the image under the microscope may not tell the whole story.

Recap: TGen Annual Scientific Retreat Highlights Collaboration & Innovation

Thank you to everyone who participated in and supported this year’s Annual Scientific Retreat! The event successfully brought together colleagues from across TGen and our City of Hope physician-scientist community to share insights, spark new ideas, and strengthen our collective research network. Presentations focused heavily on how innovative technologies are driving our mission forward. Key scientific updates included advances in proteomic technology, emerging spatial transcriptomic opportunities, and pioneering work in nanobody therapeutics—demonstrating how TGen continues to push the innovation and impact of precision medicine.

Dr. Trent emphasized TGen's integral role in advancing technology and discoveries that impact patients. As well as the unique opportunity in the Arizona market with TGen and City of Hope Arizona. City of Hope Arizona President Laurie Sicaeros and Chief Clinical Officer Alan Bryce, MD, highlighted the expansion of City of Hope Arizona into Prescott and future clinics. Thank you to the City of Hope leadership and scientific community for attending, participating, and helping to identify areas of opportunity.

Let’s talk about Ovarian Cancer:

🛑 Ovarian cancer is the deadliest reproductive cancer for women.
📊 1 in 91 women will be diagnosed.
📉 Funding for women’s health research is currently only 1/5 of that for men’s health.

But there is immense hope: If caught early, 93% of women diagnosed have a 5-year survival rate.

TGen researchers are working on an Ovarian Cancer Screening & Early Detection Initiative to catch this disease before it progresses. Help us continue to expand access to cancer research by following us on social media and learn more about ways to support cancer research and funding.

Building the future scientific workforce requires bridging the gap between student curiosity and real-world application through mentorship, hands-on experience, and professional development.

TGen programs, including the Helios Scholars program and the TGen Bioscience Leadership Academy, equip young researchers with essential technical skills, ethical foundations, and interdisciplinary collaboration to tackle modern biomedical challenges. By removing financial barriers through paid internships and providing early community exposure, these initiatives ensure a resilient, diverse STEM pipeline capable of advancing precision medicine and public health.
