To all the midwives - the ones who are "with women"
the ones who stand at the sacred threshold of birth for all of those who pass through it,
the ones who are not allowed to call themselves midwives because the government decided they can own that title, to the ones who came before us, our grandmother's, grandmother's, grandmother's, the ones who are coming up, the ones who have been imprisoned for this work, the ones who gave up birthdays, holidays and days and days of sleep, and to the midwives who have left an indelible mark on my very soul, today I honor you
Happy International Day of the Midwife

✨️MIDWIVES UNITED✨️

50% of births with midwives by 2050

This photo right here captures the biggest threat to the corporations and institutions who have co-opted and commoditied childbirth and women's health.

CNM's and CPM's united.

Thank you SO MUCH to Arizona ACNM for uniting us again, under one roof, for the 3rd year in a row.

Hospital based CNM's, community CNM's, CPM's, students and even a few OB's in the house.
We learned, we ate, we laughed, we got to know each other a little bit more, sharing our trials and our triumphs with each other.
Together we are better. Together we can do what we cannot do alone

The placental site is where the placenta was attached to the uterine wall, and when it detaches after birth, it exposes raw tissue and open blood vessels.

It is not a wound and it is not the size of a dinner plate.

Calling it a wound helps communicate the importance of rest and healing during postpartum (especially in American culture where people underestimate how much recovery is happening).
But it can also sound overly dramatic or even pathologizing.

It does bleed, and the body begins a rapid repair process involving uterine contractions, clotting, and tissue remodeling.
So yes, it is a site of healing, but it’s not an open wound with broken skin or tissue that needs external repair.
It typically measures 8–9 cm in diameter immediately after birth.

By the end of the first week, the site is much smaller and more sealed off — often under 3–4 cm across.
By week 3–4, it's almost completely regenerated in a normal recovery.
Why the word “wound” persists:

Trust the body in it's innate wisdom, and support it with good nutrition and rest.
