Spring pushed your body hard. Summer is often when it tells you.

In Arizona, June brings a sharp increase in golf, pickleball, paddleboarding, wake sports, and indoor training. It's also when overuse injuries tend to surface clinically.

At Desert Spine and Sports Physicians, our board-certified, fellowship-trained physiatrists and pain management physicians evaluate the mechanics behind spine and joint pain, not just the symptoms themselves. Whether the issue involves lumbar rotation stress, shoulder overuse, tendinopathy, or radiculopathy, identifying the source early can help prevent a longer recovery later in the season.

The goal is not to stop activity. It is helping you move through summer with better function and fewer limitations.

PRP vs. BMAC

What’s the difference, and how do you know which treatment is right for your pain?
Both are non-surgical regenerative therapies designed to support healing, but they work differently.

-PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) uses concentrated platelets from your blood to help reduce inflammation and support tissue healing.
-BMAC (Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate) uses concentrated cells and growth factors from bone marrow to support repair in more complex joint or musculoskeletal conditions.

At Desert Spine and Sports Physicians, our board-certified, fellowship-trained physiatrists and pain management physicians take a diagnostic-first approach to determine which treatment may best support your recovery and function.
The right answer starts with the right diagnosis.

The pain you have been ignoring has a source. The question is whether anyone has taken the time to identify it correctly.

Many men dealing with lower back pain, joint pain, or radiculopathy delay care because they expect the answer to be vague, temporary, or simply "learn to live with it."

At Desert Spine and Sports Physicians, our board-certified, fellowship-trained physiatrists and pain management physicians take a diagnostic-first approach to spine and musculoskeletal care. Through comprehensive evaluation, imaging review, EMG testing, and physician-guided treatment planning, our goal is to identify the actual pain generator before recommending any procedure or intervention.

Pain is clinical information. Understanding it precisely is where effective care begins.

You've been managing chronic low back pain for years - but what if the source has never actually been identified?

For some patients, chronic vertebrogenic pain originates from the basivertebral nerve within the vertebral body. This pain source differs from disc-related pain, facet joint pain, or muscular strain, which is why traditional treatments often fall short.

At Desert Spine and Sports Physicians, our board-certified, fellowship-trained physiatrists and pain management physicians evaluate whether patients are candidates for Intracept, a minimally invasive basivertebral nerve ablation procedure designed specifically for vertebrogenic low back pain.

The most important step is determining whether the pain pattern and imaging findings match this diagnosis before any procedure is recommended.

If your pain keeps coming back, the treatment isn't the problem. The diagnosis is.
At Desert Spine and Sports Physicians, we start with a precise evaluation because treating the right structure changes the outcome.

That means identifying:
- Where the pain is coming from
- Which structures are involved
- What's actually driving your symptoms

If your pain keeps returning and you're not sure why, schedule an evaluation with us. Identifying the source is where lasting relief begins.

Persistent numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, or radiating pain can make everyday activities frustrating, especially when the cause isn’t immediately clear.

That’s where EMG and nerve conduction studies come in. These electrodiagnostic tests help physicians evaluate nerve and muscle function, providing important insights into conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, pinched nerves, and other neuromuscular disorders.

At Desert Spine and Sports Physicians, EMG testing helps move beyond guesswork to better understand the source of symptoms and guide the next steps in treatment.

Curious about what an EMG test can diagnose, how it works, and when it may be recommended? Read our latest blog to learn more: desertspineandsports.com/blog/conditions-emg-test-diagnose

PRP is one of the most requested regenerative treatments we offer - but it only works when it's matched to the right diagnosis.

Platelet-Rich Plasma uses components from your own blood to support healing in injured tendons, joints, and soft tissue. At Desert Spine and Sports Physicians, we don't start with the treatment. We start with a precise evaluation to confirm it's the right fit for your specific condition.

At Desert Spine and Sports Physicians, treatment starts with a precise diagnosis, because the right therapy only works when it’s applied to the right problem.

Learn whether PRP is the right option for your specific injury, so you can get back to movement without relying on temporary fixes.

A work-related injury can disrupt more than your job. It can affect how you move, sleep, exercise, and get through everyday life.

Understanding what to expect at your workers’ comp doctor visit can help you feel more prepared and more confident about the next steps in your recovery.
In our latest blog, our board-certified, fellowship-trained physiatrists and pain management physicians explain:
-What happens during a workers’ comp evaluation
-What information to bring to your appointment
-How diagnostic testing and imaging may be used
-Non-surgical treatment options for work-related injuries
-Why early, accurate diagnosis matters

At Desert Spine and Sports Physicians, we take a diagnostic-first approach to spine, joint, and musculoskeletal injuries, helping patients understand the source of pain before recommending treatment.

Is a herniated disc the same as a bulging disc?
Not exactly, and the difference matters.
A bulging disc occurs when the disc protrudes outward, but the outer layer remains intact.

A herniated disc means part of the inner material has pushed through that outer layer.

Both can cause pain, but not always for the same reasons or in the same way.
That’s why getting the right diagnosis is key.

Because the treatment approach depends on what’s actually happening in your spine.

Both can cause pain. Both can be addressed non-surgically with the right diagnosis.

Schedule an evaluation with Desert Spine and Sports Physicians to find out what's actually happening in your spine - so your treatment plan starts with the right answer.
