One of the things that our team works hard for is collaborative care relationships with other medical providers. We know that making birth safer for the families in our care means working as a part of a care TEAM when necessary. Lately, we have had a few circumstances arise that have required swift action from our skilled midwives *and* calls to other providers to assist us in providing the best, most appropriate care for families in our care.

Today, I was overwhelmed with deep gratitude for several providers who have given top-notch care alongside our midwifery care team. After taking Julie Moon NRP class, I always make sure to send thank you notes when I have the privilege of positive interactions with other healthcare professionals. Today I am sending thank you cards to a fetal cardiologist, two nurses, a Phoenix Fire crew, and an OBGYN. Each one of these people has collaborated with our midwifery team at some point over the last month regarding care for our clients. I am overflowing with gratitude 🤎

This was not the update that I wanted to post, but it is the update that is necessary.

HB2251 died in the Senate because politicians decided to play a game where we became collateral damage. It died because Senate President Warren Petersen never gave it a chance to live when he decided not to have it heard. HB2251 was the ONLY bill on a Senate agenda yesterday that was never called for a vote.

This is unethical and unacceptable.

In doing so, Senator Petersen has ensured that Licensed Midwives will not have appropriate oversight nor adequate medication access for *at least* 18 more months. All because of big egos, small minds, and political allegiances.

Unfortunately for him, midwives are the most tenacious group of humans I’ve ever met. And we will FIGHT when it matters most.

This year is an election year. Let it be known that the man who did not allow this bill to be heard is also running for Attorney General.

In contrast, we had some INCREDIBLE bi-partisan support through the following legislators:

This Black Maternal Health Week, we honor the strength of Black mothers, the wisdom passed through generations, and the importance of culturally rooted, respectful care.

Every heartbeat matters. Every mother deserves to be heard, supported, and safe. We will continue providing culturally congruent midwifery care to help make that happen. 🤎

If it’s not one thing, it’s another. The latest shenanigans from ADHS are pretty wild. But as we know, this community is a FORCE and we are not going to back down until our voices are heard and until we have a safer Arizona for mothers and babies. Please take 3 mins to see an email to Gov. Hobbs to let her know that HB2251 is ESSENTIAL for the health and safety of community birth in Arizona. We need your voice!!
