Falls are not a normal part of aging, yet they remain one of the leading causes of injury among older adults.

The good news is that many falls can be prevented with a combination of simple home modifications, healthy habits, and proactive healthcare.

A few weeks ago, members of the Right at Home corporate team had the opportunity to volunteer with The Furniture Project - Omaha, where service took many forms. Some assembled toddler beds, some shopped for families in need, and others helped prepare incoming donations for their next home.

We also had the chance to connect with founder Drew Gerken, who shared the story behind the organization and the ways our missions intersect. His commitment to helping people live with dignity in their homes reflects the same values that inspire the work we do every day. We’re grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside an organization making such a meaningful impact in our community.

Stories of Our People: Part 20

Howard and Anna were both 86, and were one of our earliest clients, as well as the first clients we ever had where we approached their care as a couple. They each had their own set of unique issues. Howard had dementia and restless leg syndrome, and Anna had several physical challenges but was quite sharp. Our caregivers were utilized for morning wake-up routines as well as nighttime routines and meal prep. They had very specific and regimented dietary needs, and also a fluffy little dog (“Noodle”) that neither of them could take out for a walk on their own.

They had been married 59 years, and Anna was the quarterback of their situation. I was always in awe of how, in spite of all their challenges, they joked around with each other and with me. They were also exceptionally polite to each other. They were with us for almost three years and it went by in a flash. Howard got worse very quickly and passed about five months before Anna. I had always been cognizant of the dynamic wherein couples pass away very close to each other in timing, and I have found that to be true in this business. I'm not sure if it's because managing Howard’s care was the mission that was driving Anna, i.e. keeping her going -- or if his care was wearing her down, but I think she would not have done it any differently regardless. I will always remember them as a model couple. Noodle found a new home with one of their caregivers.

When Shalom Plotkin and his wife, Elise Braverman-Plotkin, returned to Cleveland in 2014, they did so with a personal mission. As Elise's father battled Parkinson's disease, the family experienced firsthand the importance of dependable, compassionate home care. They quickly realized how much of a difference the right support could make, not only for older adults but also for the loved ones caring for them. At the same time, they discovered there was no Right at Home serving Cleveland's east side. Inspired by their family's experience and a shared calling to help others, they opened their Right at Home office and began building a team dedicated to helping seniors live safely and independently wherever they call home.

Today, Right at Home Cleveland East and Right at Home Highland Heights offices proudly serve families throughout Cleveland's east side. For Shalom, whose background includes service as a military chaplain and counselor, the most rewarding moments are often the simplest: helping a client avoid a fall, stay on track with medications, enjoy a good meal, or simply have someone to talk with. He believes what truly sets their office apart is the strength of the relationships they build. Many caregivers and team members have been with the organization for years, providing the continuity, trust, and familiarity that clients and families value. Through ongoing training, caregiver support, and a culture that celebrates the people delivering care each day, Shalom and Elise have created a team focused on making a meaningful difference, one client, one caregiver, and one day at a time.

Amie, a caregiver with Right at Home Rhome, TX, is always looking for creative ways to keep Mr. Billy active, engaged, and enjoying each day. Knowing how important both movement and recreation are, she purchased an indoor bowling set with her own money to create a special activity just for him.

After transforming the hallway into a makeshift bowling lane, Amie spent the day by Mr. Billy's side, resetting pins, returning the ball, and cheering him on with every turn. Her patience and enthusiasm helped make the experience both fun and accessible.

What made the day special wasn't the bowling itself. It was the attention and care Amie put into creating an experience centered around what would bring Mr. Billy happiness. Her kindness turned an ordinary day into a memory worth celebrating, and Mr. Billy thoroughly enjoyed every moment.

Stories like this are a reminder that sometimes the smallest gestures can make the biggest difference in one's quality of life. 🧡🩵
