🫁 September is Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Month. And this is a condition most people have never heard of β€” until someone they love is diagnosed with it.

Pulmonary fibrosis is a progressive scarring of lung tissue that makes every breath gradually harder. It cannot be reversed. But it can be slowed β€” significantly β€” if caught early. The problem is the average delay from first symptoms to correct diagnosis is 2 years. Two years of lung function that cannot be recovered.

250,000 Americans are living with PF right now. 50,000 new cases are diagnosed every year. And a persistent dry cough and gradual breathlessness β€” the earliest signs β€” are almost always attributed to something else first.

Swipe through πŸ‘‰ what pulmonary fibrosis actually is, the early signs to watch for and why early diagnosis changes everything.

πŸ’Ύ Save this β€” share with anyone who has had a dry cough that will not go away.

Don't wait for a persistent cough or breathlessness to start prioritizing your respiratory health. Small habitsβ€”like keeping your indoor air clean, staying active, and getting regular screeningsβ€”go a long way in protecting your air capacity.

Did you know your lungs do some absolutely mind-blowing things every single second? 🫁✨

Here are 4 facts that will change how you think about every breath you take:

🎾 The Tennis Court Effect: If you unrolled all the tiny air sacs (alveoli) inside your lungs and laid them flat, they would cover an entire tennis court! That is a massive surface area packed inside your chest.

🌊 Natural Floats: Your lungs are the only organs in the entire human body that can float on water.

πŸ«€ The Left Side Lean: Your left lung is actually about 10% smaller than your right lung. Nature designed it this way to leave perfect room for your heart to sit comfortably.

🌬️ The Daily Count: You take roughly 20,000 breaths every single day without even thinking about it.Go ahead, take a deep breath right now and give your lungs some appreciation!

😴 You slept 8 hours. You wake exhausted. That is not August heat. That could be sleep apnea β€” and Phoenix summer is making it significantly worse.

Heat causes nasal tissue to swell, increasing upper airway resistance and making airway collapse during sleep more likely. Dehydration β€” extremely common in Phoenix August β€” dries airway tissue and increases apnea frequency. 90Β°F overnight lows disrupt deep sleep even with the AC on. And 80% of sleep apnea cases remain completely undiagnosed.

If you or someone you live with snores loudly, wakes gasping, gets morning headaches or feels exhausted despite 7–9 hours of sleep β€” this is worth investigating.

Swipe through πŸ‘‰ how Phoenix heat worsens sleep apnea, the signs most people miss, and why sleep apnea combined with COPD is a combination that needs specialist management.

πŸ’Ύ Save this β€” share with someone who is always tired despite sleeping enough.

πŸ’¬ One of our most asked questions this August: "What does a wheeze actually mean?"

A wheeze is not just a sound. It is a signal β€” the sound of air being forced through a narrowed airway. And what it means depends entirely on when it happens, what triggers it, whether your inhaler helps and how long it lasts.

In Phoenix August β€” haboob dust, wildfire smoke, peak ozone and extreme heat are all narrowing airways across the Valley right now. If you or someone you know has been wheezing more than usual this month, this post is the answer your GP may not have given you.

Swipe through πŸ‘‰ exactly what a wheeze is, the 6 causes we investigate in Phoenix August patients, and the green-yellow-red guide to knowing when to call vs when to go to the ER.

And drop your next question for the pulmonologist in the comments below β€” we read every one and answer the most common ones every month.

β˜€οΈ Did you know β€” Phoenix ranks #4 worst city in the US for ozone pollution. And August, with wall-to-wall sunshine and 118Β°F days, is the peak of ozone season in the Valley.

The problem: ozone is completely invisible. A clear, beautiful August morning can have dangerously high ozone levels β€” and the only way to know is to check before you go outside.

Swipe through πŸ‘‰ what ozone actually does to your lungs, your AQI guide to save, and exactly when to stay inside this August.

βœ… Under 50 β€” go outside freely
⚠️ 51–100 β€” reduce outdoor intensity
πŸ”΄ Over 100 β€” sensitive groups stay inside
🚫 Over 150 β€” everyone stays inside

Peak ozone hours in Phoenix August: 10AM–8PM. Best outdoor window: before 7AM or after 8PM.

πŸ’Ύ Save the AQI guide on slide 3 β€” check it every morning this August.

πŸ’‰ August is National Immunization Awareness Month. And for anyone with asthma, COPD or any chronic lung condition β€” this is the month to book your flu and pneumonia vaccines. Not October. August.

Flu in a lung patient is not just a bad week in bed. It is one of the leading triggers of acute asthma and COPD exacerbations β€” and one of the most common reasons our patients end up hospitalised every winter. Pneumococcal pneumonia is no different.

The flu vaccine takes 2 weeks to build full protection. Arizona flu season often starts as early as October. Getting vaccinated now means you are protected before the season peaks β€” not scrambling to catch up after the first wave.

Swipe through πŸ‘‰ why lung patients need both vaccines, which ones apply to you and who should book this month without delay.

πŸ’Ύ Save this β€” share with a lung patient who has not been vaccinated yet this year.
