A patient recently contacted Hannah, who works in Home Health, and indicated that he’d taken two bottles of medication in an attempt to harm himself. Hannah directed him to immediately call 911, but he refused. He even refused to tell her where he was so she could send help. So Hannah reached out to his girlfriend, who managed to get him to the hospital.

Hannah’s quick intervention helped save the man’s life. She’s been named one of our alongside Lonna of Business Services, and Mandy, Christy and Marquitia of Home Health.

Lonna recently discovered a cherished wedding ring had been left at our Medical Center. Letters were sent to the patient’s home, but it turned out the patient had been moved to a facility, so Lonna contacted the facility to have the ring delivered there. The patient was deeply appreciative because their spouse had died and they thought the ring was lost forever.

Mandy received a call recently notifying her that a patient had not eaten in a week. The patient did not have any food in her house and was struggling to shop or prepare meals. The patient’s spouse had been her primary caregiver, and he’d recently died. So Mandy, Marquitia and Christy raised money and purchased groceries. They bought microwaveable meals and things easily prepared and eaten. They delivered $150 worth of groceries after work hours, much to the delight and appreciation of the patient.

A vital part of our team at AnMed Cannon for 27 years, Wanda has habit of extending blessings to others behind the scenes, in quiet, without recognition — but someone witnessed her compassion recently and nominated her to win our honor as . She was working in registration at the Cannon Emergency Department when she bought dinner for a hungry family member of a patient.

“That is just who she is,” said Stephanie, her teammate. “Wanda is quiet, reserved and observant. She listens with not only her ears but her heart. She sees that the ‘whole patient’ receives her best care. She’s a shining star and a role model to our team.”

Dr. Angelica Thapa was recently with a patient who was transitioning to comfort care. The patient was upset with her appearance, so Dr. Thapa brushed her hair and pulled it back to provide a measure of contentment.

In another case, a very difficult family situation in the ICU plagued a patient’s care. Dr. Thapa adeptly handled the trying circumstances. She oversaw a transfer for the patient and professionally tended to a challenging family member.

She’s known and appreciated for treating patients, nurses and others with respect, compassion and kindness. She’s our .

A man was rushed to our Emergency Department recently while suffering a major heart attack, but despite the best, tireless efforts, he could not be saved. Cardiologist Dr. John Meehan IV — who is the personal cardiologist for the man’s wife of nearly 54 years — delivered the sad news to the wife and daughter. He escorted them to see the patient, and he prayed with them. He stayed with them until the family had to leave.

He answered every question and offered help every way he could.

The wife reported that her pastor, who had arrived at the hospital, too, thought Dr. Meehan must have been related to them because he’d never seen a doctor be quite that kind and caring to a family before.

A week later, Dr. Meehan called the family just to say he was thinking of them.
For his care, he’s been named our Physician of the Quarter.

“Dr. Meehan is the embodiment of what it means to practice medicine as a calling, not just a profession,” his daughter said. “His care went far beyond clinical excellence; it was deeply human. The kindness he showed my mother and me during the most heartbreaking time of our lives is something I will never forget… My family is forever grateful for Dr. Meehan and the incredible care we received.”
