This past week, the University of Pikeville Department of Public Safety completed our annual 50-hour training week.

Our officers spent long days focused on strengthening our department through training on our vision, department expectations, policies and procedures, professional standards, officer wellness, and many other important topics. The dedication, teamwork, and professionalism shown by every member of this department was outstanding.

I couldn’t be more proud of the way everyone came together, worked hard, and embraced the high expectations we have for serving the University of Pikeville community.

A sincere thank you to everyone who helped make this week of training possible. Your time, effort, and support are truly appreciated. Here’s to another year of providing the highest level of service to our campus community!

Heat Exhaustion vs Heat Stroke: Know the Difference!
With temperatures climbing and heat indexes pushing into dangerous territory, it’s important to know the warning signs before it becomes an emergency.
🥵 Heat Exhaustion can happen when your body overheats and loses too much water and salt.
Signs include:
• Heavy sweating
• Weakness or tiredness
• Dizziness or feeling faint
• Headache
• Nausea
• Cool, pale, clammy skin
• Fast heartbeat
➡️Move to a cooler place, drink fluids if able, loosen clothing, and cool the body down.
🚨 Heat Stroke is a medical emergency!
This happens when the body can no longer control its temperature.
Warning signs:
• Body temperature around 103°F or higher
• Confusion, strange behavior, or loss of consciousness
• Hot, red skin (may or may not be sweating)
• Seizures
• Severe headache
• Rapid pulse
🚑 If someone is showing signs of heat stroke — call 911 immediately and begin cooling them while waiting for help.
A few reminders:
💧 Drink plenty of water
🌳 Take breaks in the shade or AC
🚗 Never leave children or pets in a hot vehicle
👵 Check on elderly neighbors and those who may be more vulnerable

* WHAT...Dangerously hot conditions are expected for several
consecutive days with afternoon heat index values exceeding 105
degrees and only limited relief at night.

* WHERE...Portions of east central, northeast, and southeast
Kentucky.

* WHEN...Until 8 PM EDT Friday.

* IMPACTS...Heat related illnesses increase significantly during
extreme heat and high humidity events.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...An extended period of hot and humid
conditions will commence - with the most oppressive conditions
expected on Thursday.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of
the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
