Why diets don’t always work long term
Have you tried a diet, lost some weight, and then found yourself back where you started? It can feel frustrating and leave you wondering what to do differently.
Some diets focus on quick results without giving you an approach you can maintain.
They may:
🍽️ Leave you hungry. Overly restrictive portions and food rules can make it hard to feel satisfied.
📅 Clash with everyday life. Plans that don’t consider your schedule, budget, culture, and food preferences can be difficult to follow.
🔄 Encourage all-or-nothing thinking. One meal or missed workout can feel like you’ve undone your progress.
But a diet doesn’t have to be a temporary fix. A flexible way of eating that includes foods you enjoy and works with your life can help you build lasting habits.
And it’s not just about willpower. As you lose weight, your body can respond by increasing hunger and slowing your metabolism, which can make it harder to keep the weight off.
Sometimes, lasting changes take more than a new way of eating—and it’s okay to need extra support. A dietitian or physician can help you understand what’s affecting your progress and work with you to adjust your plan.
