This is for the person whose grief arrived with a specific kind of confusion attached to it.
Not only the loss of the person. But the loss of the version of them that existed in your mind for all the months or years before you knew what you now know. The version you trusted completely. The version that the evidence seemed so clearly to support.
The version that felt more real than most things in your life because it was built from your own direct experience and your own witnessed moments and your own felt certainty about who this person was.
And then the truth arrived. And the version of them that had felt so real, that had been the reference point for so much of how you understood love and safety and being known, turned out to have been something other than what it appeared. And now you are grieving not only who you lost but who you thought they were. Which is a different grief. And in some ways a harder one.
Neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett at Northeastern University, whose research into how the brain constructs its models of other people has produced some of the most revolutionary findings in modern social neuroscience, found that the brain does not perceive other people directly or objectively. It constructs them. It builds detailed, internally generated models of who other people are, based on observable behavior, emotional context, prior experience, and the brain’s own existing frameworks for how people work, and it updates those models continuously as new information arrives.
When the new information that arrives fundamentally contradicts the model that has been built, what the brain experiences is not simply surprise or disappointment. It is the specific cognitive and emotional experience of a model being dismantled. A model that had been treated as reliable, that had been used as the foundation for decisions and vulnerabilities and forms of trust that now have to be reexamined in the light of the new information, being revealed as less accurate than the confidence placed in it warranted.
Researcher Jennifer Freyd at the University of Oregon, whose work on betrayal trauma has produced some of the most important findings in the psychology of violated trust, found that betrayal by someone who was deeply trusted produces a specific neural and psychological response that is categorically different from loss of someone who was known accurately. The brain processing the loss of someone who turned out to be different from who they appeared must do two simultaneous things that conventional grief does not require. It must grieve the loss of the relationship. And it must do the disorienting work of revising its model of who that person was, which requires revisiting and reinterpreting memories that were previously understood through a framework that has now been invalidated.
This double grief, loss of the person and loss of the certainty you had about them, is one of the most neurologically complex and least publicly acknowledged forms of heartbreak. And the confusion it produces, the specific disorientation of not knowing which memories were real, which moments were genuine, which parts of what you experienced were as true as they felt, is not a failure of your perception or your intelligence. It is the accurate experience of a brain that trusted its model completely and is now doing the unprecedented work of revising it from the ground up.
You did not miss something you should have seen. You trusted a model that the other person worked, consciously or not, to make convincing. And the grief of discovering the gap between the model and the reality is as legitimate and as deserving of care as any other grief. Maybe more so, because it arrives accompanied by the specific loneliness of having to revise not just the future but the past.
