Yesterday, we had a Lego Serious Play Workshop at the Hendricks County Work Release. This time the Workshop had to do with communication and boundaries.

We hope the 5 men who showed up gained some insight into what they are building in their own lives where communication and boundaries are concerned.

We had some great discussions about their experience, both unhealthy and healthy communication, and how it felt and played out for both.

One build at a time we are helping bring tough subjects to the table while doing something creative with our hands.

Somehow, in the middle of everything happening this week, we missed a pretty important date.

On Monday, August 17, 2026, Unlikely Journeys, Inc. turned FOUR. 💜

Unlikely Journeys began as an idea years before it became an organization. The vision started taking shape during incarceration in 2012–2013—a belief that lived experience could be used for something more. That our hardest experiences didn't have to be wasted. That maybe the things we've survived could become tools for helping someone else navigate their own unlikely journey.

There were plenty of internal barriers that kept that vision from becoming a reality. Then life changed dramatically, and so did the willingness to stop waiting.

And people showed up.

Friends. Board members. Mentors. Professionals who offered their knowledge. People who encouraged the vision before there was much to see. Community partners who opened doors. People who believed in what Unlikely Journeys could become.

And, yes, even the people who doubted it.
Sometimes discouragement has a funny way of becoming fuel. We've learned to take what could stop us and turn it into energy to keep building.
Because Unlikely Journeys has become so much bigger than one person.

These four years have been about learning, creating, experimenting, building relationships, making mistakes, adjusting, and continuing to show up.

At times, the growth has felt slow.
Looking back, though, maybe it hasn't been slow at all.

Maybe it's been right on time.

We're incredibly grateful for what this organization has taught us, for the people and communities who allow us to walk alongside them, and for every person who has played a role in getting Unlikely Journeys here.

Four years down.

And we're still learning. Still building. Still becoming.

Happy 4th Birthday, Unlikely Journeys. 💜

We are incredibly grateful to The 24 Group, Inc. for awarding Unlikely Journeys, Inc. a $1,500 grant to support adolescents and young adults on their journey of recovery from substance use disorder and addiction. 💜

This funding is helping us create resource bags for teens filled with information, tools, and resources they can actually use—whether they are navigating substance use themselves, struggling with their mental health, looking for support, or simply need to know where they can turn when life gets hard.
Sometimes one resource, one connection, or one person saying, “Here’s somewhere you can go for help,” can make a difference.

Part of the work of Unlikely Journeys is making sure young people know that support exists, recovery is possible, and they don't have to figure everything out alone.

Thank you to The 24 Group Board and its donors for investing in adolescents and young adults in our community and helping us put resources directly into their hands.

We are excited to get these bags out into the community and into the hands of young people who can use them. 💜

Together, we can create a healthier society one relationship at a time.

About last night—

Unlikely Journeys’ Danielle Burkett partnered with Denise Purdy from Hendricks County Work Release and Drug Court to speak with PAL(Parents of Addicted Loved Ones). Thank you for the invite Diane Buxton.

They spoke about peer recovery coaching, the need for family recovery coaches, how to go about becoming one, and each shared pieces of their lived experience.

They were both asked why they became recovery coaches. Denise and Danielle’s answers were different, but you can’t deny the passion they both bring to the table and the genuine care they have for people.

That is one of the beautiful things about humanity: there can be multiple ways to get somewhere, even when we share a common goal.

Together, Denise and Danielle showed what collaboration in peer recovery coaching can look like. No single coach can do this work alone. We are more powerful when we work alongside others, share resources, and recognize the different strengths each person brings to the table. Ultimately, that helps us better serve people and our communities.

We hope one of the messages families walked away with is that their experience matters, too. Families and loved ones are impacted by substance use, and their own recovery matters. Their lived experience can also become a powerful tool for helping other families navigate similar journeys.

Family recovery coaches are needed, and we hope they become a mainstay in the recovery workforce just as peer recovery coaches have.

Together, we can create a healthier society, one relationship at a time.

And, of course, we had to share a picture of the beautiful flowers gifted to the speakers! 💐
